William Harjo LoneFight

Dr. William Harjo LoneFight, (born 1966) serves as the President of the Sisseton Wahpeton College on the Lake Traverse Reservation, one of the nation's thirty-four tribal colleges. An alumnus of Dartmouth College, Oklahoma City University and Stanford University, LoneFight serves on the Board of Directors of the American Indian College Fund and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. An enrolled citizen of the Creek Nation of Oklahoma he was raised in a traditional Muscogee (Creek) Indian community. LoneFight authored a book, Achieving the Healing Community: A Guide to Traditional Knowledge of Substance Abuse Prevention (1999), to help social workers develop new approaches to substance abuse prevention. He also developed a theory of culturally effective systemic reform in the disciplines of math, science and technology to capitalize on students’ cultural backgrounds and enhance their learning process.

Name

Lone Fight is a broad family name related exclusively to the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation of the Fort Berthold Reservation in North Dakota. The original spelling of "Lone Fight" consists of two words but with the advent of computers compounding the name into "LoneFight" is becoming common.
