Unhinged is the name of an english-only expansion to the game Magic: The Gathering. It is an "funny" set, based on humor and is far less serious than traditional Magic expansions.

Background

On August 7th, 1998, a humorous expansion known as Unglued was released. Unlike other serious sets, Unglued was purposely comical, poking fun at the game itself, as well as the players. Many cards featured unique features, deemed too strange or impractical for a serious card expansion.

While players enjoyed the set, the tournament-illegal status of the set caused many serious players to avoid buying many cards. The exception to this was Unglued basic land cards, which were tournament legal (and still highly prized.)

Because of the moderate success of the set, designers began work on an Unglued sequal, named Unglued 2: The Obligitory Sequal. However, Wizards of the Coast felt that releasing another 'funny' set, plus the standard 'serious' sets, would go beyond market saturation. Unglued 2 was scrapped.

Since that time, many players have asked for a sequal to Unglued, and were always told that it would not be happening any time soon. On April 1st, 2004, Magic designer Mark Rosewater posted an article, announcing the sequel to Unglued, Unhinged.

Reaction was mixed. A sequel to Unglued seemed to be too good to be true; combined with the date in which the announcement was posted, the circumstances led many to believe it was merely an April fools joke.

The next day, Rosewater posted again, making a poll asking if they believed an Unglued sequel was actually in the works, and if they would enjoy such a sequel.

3 days from then, Rosewater confirmed that, indeed, Unhinged was a reality.

Known cards or card aspects

Disclaimer: Some of these cards are from 'spoilers', information released before offical confirmation. Since I am the original article writer, I will only be adding card themes which have some sort of proof exist.

Known card aspects

  • The 'main creature type' of Unhinged is the donkey. This allows cards which refer to the term 'ass' without offending anyone for swearing
  • Fractions in situations typically used by whole numbers ('I attack you for 3 1/3 damage')
  • Gotcha - Cards which can be returned from graveyard to hand, if your opponent laughs, says a specific word, etc.

Known cards

  • Ass Whuppin' - A card that destroys any card from Unglued or Unhinged you can see from where you're sitting/standing, even one in a different game
  • Greater Morphling - A creature that makes fun of an already powerful creature by making it extremely powerful, with alilities such as changing its expansion symbol or artist credit
  • Mouth To Mouth - A card that decides who controls a creature based on a breath-holding contest.
  • Richard Garfield, Ph.D. - A card that lets you play cards as any card of your choice instead of its regular self provided that they have the same mana cost.
  • Yet Another AEther Vortex - An enchantment that gives all creatures haste, causes all players have the top card of their libraries revealed, and has those cards considered in play. Goes for some pretty complex rules reactions.
  • Cheatyface - Sneaked out by John Carter from the CR and UNH Sign Historic Agreement rules column, it is allowed to be sneaked into play, and unless your opponent catches you in the act of sneaking it into play, it stays in play.
  • Toy Boat - A creature that causes you to have to say "Toy Boat" repeatedly, or it is destroyed.
  • Time Machine - Remove a creature you control, return it in the next game you play.
  • Erase (Not The Urza's Legacy Card) - Remove an enchantment for free, if you have enough white cards which share the same artist.
  • Spell Counter - A counterspell that if your opponent says "counter" or "spell", comes back to counter again.
  • Mother of Goons - A creature which forces you to insult any enemy creatures that go into a graveyard.
  • When Fluffy Bunnies Attack - Weaken a creature, depending on how many letters are in it's name.
  • Name Dropping - If your opponent says the name of a card you have in your graveyard, you can return it to your hand.
  • Circle of Protection: Artist - Defend yourself against cards with a specific artist.
  • Man of Measure - A knight which is more powerful if you're shorter than your opponent.
  • Framed! - Tap cards with a specific artist's name.
  • Bad Ass - A creature which can regenerate, if you growl at your opponent.
  • Wet Willie of the Damned - A spell which allows you to steal exactly 2 and a half life from your opponent.
  • Mon's Goblin Waiters - A creature which allows you to sacrifice other creatures or land for exactly 1/2 of a red mana.
  • Orcish Paratroopers - If this card lands face-up from dropping it a foot above the table, it doesn't die.
  • Blank - A creature with no name.
  • Our Market Research Shows That Players Like Really Long Card Names So We Made This Card to Have the Absolute Longest Card Name Ever Elemental - Self explanitory.
  • Who/What/Where/When/Why - In the Invasion set of Magic, there were cards with 2 cards in one. This is 5 in one.
  • Avatar of Me - A creature which is stronger based on height and shoe size.
  • Little girl - a .5/.5 creature for .5 of a white mana.
  • Fat Ass - a card that gains a power bonus when you are eating... plus allows you to say "hey dude, you've got a 'Fat Ass'" with impunity
  • Rocket Powered Turbo Slug - has super haste, can attack before you play it, but then you lose the game if you don't play it.
