County Borough of Warley
Warley County Borough was formed in 1966 after the county boroughs of Oldubury and Rowley Regis and the urban district council of Smethwick. All of the county was in Staffordshire except Oldbury which was in Worcestershire, so the boundaries changed to include Oldbury in Staffordshire with the rest of the new borough. Warley took its name from Warley Woods in Oldbury.
On the formation of the West Midlands metropolitan county in 1974, the county Borough of Warley merged with the county borough of West Bromwich to form the Metropolitan Borough of Sandwell.
Famous people from the borough of Warley include Frank Skinner, the comedian who was born at Oldbury in 1957, and the actress Julie Walters who is also from Oldbury. Christine McVeigh, a former member of the rock group Fleetwood Mac, was born in Smethwick.
