Shlomo Argov
Appearance
Shlomo Argov (December 14, 1929 - February 23,2003) was the Israeli ambassador to the United Kingdom whose attempted killing sparked Israel's Invasion of Lebanon.
On June 3, 1982, three men apporached Argov as he got into his car in London. One man shot Argov through the head. He was not killed, though he remained in a coma for three months and was paralyzed until his death in 2003. His assailants were from the Abu Nidal organization (one of the gunmen was his cousin) and had also planned to kill a PLO official in London.
Despite the fact that the attempted assassains were not PLO members, Israel used the attack as a pretext for invading Lebanon. On June 6, a massive Israeli force burst into Lebanon and would stay there for 18 years.
