Major religions can be arguably distinguished from minor religions by having a number of adherents more than 1% of the World population. As World population given by the CIA World Fact Book is 6,379,157,361 (July 2004 est.), so major religions can be distinguished by having a number of adherents more than 63,791,573. A round figure of 64 million can be used.

Following are the major world religions:

  1. Christianity 2 billion
  2. Islam 1.3 billion
  3. Hinduism 900 million
  4. Secular/Nonreligious/Agnostic/Atheist 850 million
  5. Buddhism 360 million
  6. Chinese traditional religion 225 million
  7. Primal indigenous 150 million
  8. African Traditional and Diasporic 95 million

Minor religions having adherents less then 64 million (1% of world population)

  1. Sikhism 23 million
  2. Juche 19 million
  3. Spiritism 14 million
  4. Judaism 14 million
  5. Shinto 4 million
  6. Cao Dai 3 million
  7. Tenrikyo 2.4 million
  8. Neo Paganism 1 million
  9. Unitarian Universalism 800,000
  10. Rastafarianism 700,000
  11. Scientology 600,000
  12. Zoroastrianism 150,000
