The Real World/Road Rules Challenge is a reality television series on MTV, a spin-off of that network's two flagship reality series, The Real World and Road Rules. The Challenge pits cast members from past seasons of the two shows against each other, usually dividing them into two separate teams according to different criteria, such as by gender, which of the two shows they first appeared on, etc. The two teams must complete challenges in order to win prizes and advance in the game. Recent seasons have taken a cue from other reality shows by adopting the system of eliminating contestants based on performance, or having a team vote a member into an elimination round, in which they must compete against a member from the other team to determine which one goes home.

History

During the filming of Real World: Boston and Road Rules: Islands, the two casts met while the Real World cast was vacationing in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Producers set up a face-off where both teams would compete for a cash prize. The intensely competitive challenge brought in high ratings and this set ideas in motion to produce yet another spin-off series. In 1998, the Challenge series was born with Road Rules: All Stars.

After All Stars, producers decided to include former castmembers of Road Rules in as well. In the next season, two six-member teams were sent around the country in a competition to see which show could best the other in head-to-head competition. The series followed the format for three years and brought in hugely successful ratings.

Following the hugely successful boom of reality television in the new millennium, producers decided to add new elements to the series. In 2001, production began on Battle of the Seasons. This season, the first to depart from the classic six-member structure, brought in a large group of former castmembers to compete in one location. During the filming of this challenge, it was heavily rumored that the challenge would borrow heavily from the hugely popular reality television show, Survivor. Castmembers were "voted off the island" and for a short time during production, it was rumored that the cast was sleeping outside in tents. (This later proved to be false as the casts stayed in a five-star resort.)

Beginning with the Battle of the Seasons, MTV added a fantasy challenge game to their website. Players "draft" cast members, a la fantasy baseball and cast members are given points for performing certain tasks, such as cursing or "hooking up."

After switching to the "vote off" format, the series would alternate between "Battle" seasons, including two seasons of Battle of the Sexes and themed challenges which included the Gauntlet and Inferno seasons. Both the Gauntlet and Inferno seasons contained "showdown" matches between members of the two opposing teams. The castmember who lost the showdown would be sent home. The Gauntlet seasons featured an intracast dynamic as teams were forced to vote off castmembers within their own groups into the showdown. While the Inferno seasons featured an intercast dynamic as teams were forced to vote off castmembers from the other group into the showdown.

In 2005, Bunim-Murray Productions decided to invite new people to the Challenges who were never a part of either Real World or Road Rules. This was decision was forced, in part, because of the status of Road Rules at the time. While Road Rules had stopped production until further notice after its thirteenth season, Real World had just finished wrapping its sixteenth season in Austin, Texas. This created an inbalance between the casts, as newer castmembers were invited to participate in the Challenges more often than older castmembers.

The Challenge has yet to be picked up by MTV for any additional seasons, although as of March 2006, several castmembers have been approached by Bunim-Murray to appear in a new season of the Challenge.

Seasons

Season 1: Road Rules: All-Stars

All-Stars Cast (From L to R: Rachel Campos, Eric Nies, Cynthia Roberts, Jon Brennan and Sean Duffy)

Road Rules: All Stars is officially the first season to begin the Challenge series. Although originally intended as a short season of Road Rules, the idea behind All Stars was to put six former Real World castmembers in a Winnebago and have them travel around the world. If they got to the end of the series without quitting, they would win a handsome reward. This season started in Lake Placid, New York and ended in Key West, Florida.

Castmembers for this season included:

Host: David "Puck" Rainey aka Mr. Big: Real World: San Francisco

SEASON THE REAL WORLD: NAME
1 NEW YORK Eric Nies
2 LOS ANGELES Jon Brennan
3 SAN FRANCISCO Rachel Campos
5 MIAMI Cynthia Roberts
6 BOSTON Sean Duffy

Handsome Reward: A trip for two to Puerto Rico.
Status: Each castmember made it to the end to receive their handsome reward. However, Cynthia almost abruptly left after she was fooled into eating insects for a challenge.

Memorable Moments:

  • The Road Rules: Northern Trail cast handed off the keys to the winnebago after their season ended in Lake Placid, New York.
  • The cast "zorbing" in New Zealand.
  • One of the old elements of Road Rules that was carried onto this show was how the cast had all their money and credit cards taken away. The cast was so broke that they had to peddle for money on the streets of New Zealand.
  • Rachel refused to put on the Hot Dog on a Stick uniform in Venice Beach, California because it would upset her parents and demean her education.
  • Cynthia freaks out and demands to be sent home after eating insects that were cooked to look like gourmet food.
  • Sean and Rachel would meet for the first time to begin their relationship and eventual marriage on this season.

Trivia:

  • Eric originally felt insulted that Sean was asked to do the show. Sean was fresh off his appearance on the Boston season and Eric felt that Sean had not experienced enough of the notoriety of being on the Real World to be a part of this group.
  • Syrus Yarbrough of the Boston season had a strong desire to be on this show when they were approaching his cast to do this show. Unfortunately, the producers' first choice was Sean.
  • While Rachel somewhat abhored Puck, her future husband Sean would get giddy when he would show up as Mr. Big. Apparently, Sean saw Puck as somewhat of a celebrity.

Season 2: Challenge

The Real World/Road Rules Challenge was the first six-team Challenge in the series and is sometimes incorrectly remembered as "the first season" although one season officially preceded it. The teams traveled via tour bus and RV starting in San Francisco, California, ending in Universal City, California competing in different individual challenges. The winning team had the right to travel in a tour bus, while the losing team had to travel in a RV. Each time a team won an individual challenge, they won the right to spend time in a "money machine". The "money machine", set up outside Universal Studios: Hollywood in Universal City, California was a huge wind chamber that contained up to $150,000. Whatever the casts could keep on them, they were guaranteed to keep. This season also featured an additional challenge where the two teams competed over possession of a teddy bear. Whichever team had the teddy bear in their possession at an unknown, pre-determined point in the challenge, would win the additional challenge.

Castmembers for this season included:

Host: David Edwards aka Mr. Big: Real World: Los Angeles

REAL WORLD ROAD RULES
Beth Stolarczyk: Real World: Los Angeles
Anne Wharton: Road Rules: Northern Trail
Janet Choi: Real World: Seattle
Kalle Dedolph: Road Rules: Islands
Jason Cornwell: Real World: Boston
Kefla Hare: Road Rules: Australia
Montana McGlynn: Real World: Boston
Mark Long: Road Rules: USA First Adventure
Nathan Blackburn: Real World: Seattle
Noah Rickun: Road Rules: Northern Trail
Neil Forrester: Real World: London
Roni Martin: Road Rules: Northern Trail

End Status: Team Road Rules wins the "money chamber" challenge walking away with the most money. Team Real World wins the teddy bear challenge, which ended in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Hard Rock Hotel.

Memorable Moments:

  • Beth begins her villain streak as she injures her ankle early on in the competition and refuses to go home. Although she cannot compete in various different challenges, the team is forced to carry her dead weight.
  • Janet and Jason begin to date while on the show and attempt to keep it a secret from the cameras. While the cast is at the Playboy Mansion, the two are caught kissing on the tennis courts.
  • This Challenge begins the 10-year-plus feud between Beth and Montana that would continue to the Gauntlet II, which filmed in 2005. During a bungee jumping challenge in Lake Piru, California, both Beth and Montana refuse to jump. Beth refuses to jump because of her ankle injury, while Montana refuses to jump because of damaged vertebrae in her back. The refusal on both their parts brings animosity from the rest of the team and between the two.
  • The RV that team Real World travels in frequently because of their frequent losses is blown up while the cast is in Los Angeles, California.
  • Anne twists her ankle while jumping on the trampoline at the Playboy Mansion. Christina from Road Rules: Australia steps in the "Money Chamber" as her replacement, although the editors fail to mention her presence.

Season 3: Challenge 2000

Challenge 2000 was the second six-team Challenge in the series. The teams traveled via tour bus starting in Las Vegas, Nevada, the moving to the eastern US, ending in Miami, Florida competing in different individual challenges. Each time a team won an individual challenge, they won $10,000. After each mission won, the winning team would invest those 10K in the product of their choice through E-Trade. At the end, the winning team also won any money won in the stock market. The last mission would be for the right to keep the money collected in the pot, an additional cash prize and a car. This season also featured an additional challenge where the two teams had to give up smoking for the duration of filming. If any castmember on either team were caught smoking, their cast would lose the additional challenge.

Castmembers for this season included:

Host: Gladys Sanabria aka Ms.Big: Road Rules: Latin America

REAL WORLD ROAD RULES
Amaya Brecher: Real World: Hawaii
Dan Setzler: Road Rules: Northern Trail
David Burns: Real World: Seattle
Holly Shand: Road Rules: Latin America
Heather Gardner: Real World: New York
Carlos "Los" Jackson: Road Rules: USA First Adventure
Kat Ogden: Real World: London
Piggy Thomas: Road Rules: Australia
Mike Lambert: Real World: Miami
Veronica Portillo: Road Rules: Semester At Sea
Teck Holmes: Real World: Hawaii
Yes Duffy: Road Rules: Semester At Sea

End Status: Team Road Rules wins the final challenge. Both teams lose the additional challenge as Piggy and David are caught smoking. Heather brings the camera to the bathroom to catch Piggy smoking in a RV park. David fully admitted to smoking while on the show.

Memorable Moments:

  • The first challenge was a bungee jump off the Stratosphere Tower in Las Vegas, Nevada. The castmembers had the decision to use a short-range bungee cord or use a mid-range bungee cord or use a long-range bungee cord that would purportedly break the world record for the "World Longest Bungee Jump". While David, Yes and Kat all attempted to break the world record, only Kat succeeded in doing so. Her feat, however, was never listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. All the other castmembers jumped as well.
  • Dan and Holly were in an unofficial relationship throughout filming. Although the two expressed a fond sentiment for each other, they never "hooked up".
  • Amaya and Veronica developed a season-long fight that would culminate during a football game where Amaya took down Veronica.
  • Los and Piggy were constantly at each others throats throughout the entire season, culminating in a challenge in Key West that would cost their team the individual challenge.

Season 4: Extreme Challenge

The Extreme Challenge was the third and last six-team Challenge. The casts were split up into two different six-person teams, one representing Real World and the other representing Road Rules. The teams traveled via tour bus in the eastern US and Europe competing in different individual challenges. Each time a team won an individual challenge, money would be added to a E*Trade account. Each time they won a challenge, they had the chance to invest those winnings in the stock market for the duration of the challenge. The last mission would be for the right to keep the money collected in the pot, an additional cash prize and a car.

Castmembers for this season included:

Host: Ramona Gray from Survivor: Borneo

REAL WORLD ROAD RULES
Dan Renzi Real World: Miami
Christian Breivik Road Rules: USA Second Adventure
Julie Stoffer Real World: New Orleans
Emily Bailey Road Rules: USA Second Adventure
Jamie Murray Real World: New Orleans
Laterrian Wallace Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour
Kameelah Phillips Real World: Boston
James Orlando Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour
Rebecca Lord Real World: Seattle
Michelle Parma Road Rules: Europe
Syrus Yarbrough Real World: Boston
Ayanna Mackins Road Rules: Semester At Sea*
Susie Meister Road Rules: Australia*
  • Susie Meister replaced Ayanna Mackins when the teams arrived in Boston. Ayanna physically attacked Christian in the Road Rules bus after Christian made a joke to Laterrian that was perceived by Ayanna to be racist. Although the cameras didn't capture the incident and Christian didn't want to send Ayanna home, producers asked Ayanna to leave. Susie replaced Ayanna when their casts received their next clue at the Boston firehouse where the sixth season of the Real World took place. The Road Rules team later admitted on the reunion that Ayanna was a more valuable physical asset than Susie.

End Status: Team Real World wins their first challenge ever. Both teams took home a profit from their E*Trade Challenge.

Memorable Moments:

  • Rebecca and James begin a relationship while on the show.
  • Julie's first appearance on a Challenge, which marks an aggressive, competitive side to her, which stuns much of the cast and the audience. Eventually, she becomes known less for her Mormon background and increasingly for her competitive streak on the Challenges.
    • The episode entitled Couple Fashion Show featured both teams having to dress up as famous duos in a fetish club. Julie had an emotional breakdown when hearing about the task, because she felt it would conflict with her Mormon beliefs and embarrass her family. She received encouragement from her teammates and ended up performing (And winning) in the mission. Although it is unknown why, this episode has never been aired upon its original airdate [1]
  • It was on this show that Julie learns that she is in fact being kicked out of Brigham Young University for appearing on the New Orleans season of the Real World.
  • Michelle Parma's last appearance on a Bunim-Murray show before being killed in a car crash several years later.
  • This was the first challenge that the Real World team has won.
  • A mission was hosted by LL Cool J and Chris Klein. That mission involved doing a stunt similar to those done in Rollerball, which was being filmed at the time. Christian won this mission, and ended up winning a cameo in the film (He is uncredited for his role in the film).

Season 5: Battle of the Seasons

The Battle of the Seasons premiered in early 2002. The show took place in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. In each episode, the cast competed in a challenge where the top 3 teams on Real World and Road Rules would become the "Inner Circle" had the power to vote off teams. The "Inner Circle" was determined by a cumulative score that would be tallied on a leaderboard. The final six teams would compete for a final prize worth $300,000.

Danny Roberts/Kelley Wolfe: Real World: New Orleans
Theo Vonkurnatowski/Holly Brentson: Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour
Mike Mizanin/Coral Smith: Real World: Back to New York
Adam Larson/Jisela Delgado: Road Rules: The Quest

End Status: The last remaining Real World teams were Team Back to New York, Team New Orleans and Team Boston. The last remaining Road Rules teams were Team USA Second Adventure, Team Northern Trail and Team Maximum Velocity Tour. All the finalists, except Holly, received a portion of the prize.

Memorable moments:

  • Belou, who had brought her infant child along to live in the Challenge house, excoriated fellow Road Rulers Holly and Chadwick for questioning her competence as a mother.
  • Jisela confronting Theo, Holly, Piggy and Chadwick on their alliance in the inner circle.
  • A hurricane stopped production and the cast had to be relocated to a hotel where they threw the toga party.
  • Veronica/Yes and Jon/Beth were the first people voted off their teams.
  • Coral got into an argument with Stephen on the first day. Coral was mostly frustrated with Stephen's personality.
  • Team Real World devised a contract stipulating that the teams would be voted off according to the point system that was given to them. They followed this contract, except in the case where the team decided to vote off Stephen and Lindsay, mostly because Stephen was a big source of tension in the team.
  • The Real Worlders and Road Rulers all decided that whoever won the final challenge would split the money with the opposite team. The teams formulated contracts so each castmember would get a share of the prize money. Holly thought that this was stupid and thought that the Road Rulers were going to win, and indicated that she would not split her money with Coral. Consequently, when they lost Coral decided to keep her money and gloated over it.
  • Coral walked away with the most money.

Trivia:

  • Lori Trespicio from the Real World: Back to New York was originally intended to be Mike M's teammate. Due to travel restrictions in place from the September 11th terrorist attacks, Lori could not travel to Mexico. Coral was sent as her replacement.
  • After this season of the Challenge, a stipulation in the castmembers' contracts was put in preventing any sharing of the prize.
  • This was the first challenge that the challenge took place in one area as opposed to the way where the castmembers kept on traveling around during the last four seasons.
  • To promote this season, Playboy published a pictorial on the Girls of Real World/Road Rules (Though it was entitled Girls of MTV, only girls from this show appeared in the pictorial). The models for the nude pictorial were Veronica, Beth, Jisela and Flora.

Season 6: Battle of the Sexes I

MTV Official Site In 2003, Battle of the Sexes I aired. It took place in Montego Bay, Jamaica. In this show, each mission gave points based on finish, either with a partner or alone. The top 3 from each team became the "Inner Circle" and voted off whoever they wanted to. A "lifesaver" could be given to a member of either team, with which the recipient would enjoy total immunity from being voted out, which created many interesting situations.

Host: Olympic Skier and Nagano Gold-Medal Winner Jonny Moseley.

Jisela Delgado: Road Rules: The Quest
Eric Jones: Road Rules: Campus Crawl
Rachel Robinson: Road Rules: Campus Crawl
Shane Landrum: Road Rules: Campus Crawl

End Result: The last remaining men were Colin, Mark and Jamie. The last remaining women were Ellen, Ruthie and Lori. The men beat the women in the final challenge.

Memorable Moments:

  • Before the show even began, Puck and David Edwards, both of whom were kicked out of their house by their roommates during their respective seasons, got into a verbal squabble. This squabble ended with Puck spitting in David's face. David demanded Puck ejected, but producer Jon Murray negotiated an end to the squabble without resorting to Puck's ejection. Half of the cast rallied to keep Puck on the show, while half of the cast did not care if he went home.
  • Rachel was voted off by the inner circle, and proceeded to deliver a rant in which she declared, "This game is uhg-lay!"
  • Puck and Ellen were constantly arguing during the show.
  • A feud erupted between Veronica and Emily because Veronica allegedly slept with Emily's current boyfriend James while he was helping her move into her apartment.
  • Emily's manipulation and lies caused both Veronica and Rachel to be voted off, which upset the women's team very much so.
  • Puck married his girlfriend, Betty, and mother of his infant son, Bogart, during the show. A special episode was aired that depicted the wedding, without any challenges or eliminations. Ellen, Tonya, Melissa, and Amaya were the only remaining players who did not attend the wedding, abstaining out of protest after Ellen claimed that Puck threatened her.
  • There was controversy in the final mission caused when the men completed their puzzle by observing the one the women were working on, but this was not considered cheating under the rules, and was therefore not disallowed.
  • Melissa had developed a deep animosity toward her former roommate Julie over speaking arrangements that the cast performed outside the series. Melissa claimed that Julie misrepresented her services to schools and thereby prevented her from being booked. Upon arriving to the show, Melissa made it clear that they were no longer friends. This argument continued onto MTV's website for the show and their own respective websites, where each aired their side of the story.
  • Puck left after trashing the residence when his wife was detained at departure from Jamaica for not having her green card. Because the teams had to be symmetrical, the previously voted off male, Dan, was put back in the game.
  • David Edwards, Jake, Puck and Emily were not voted off. David left because of Puck, Jake got tired of the challenge and quit, Puck left as described above, and Emily left when James was voted off.
  • In the final mission, titled "It Takes Three", the men had an early lead until they got to the second part of the challenge: a puzzle. Their difficulty with it led to the women catching up and figuring it out quickly. The men went over to the women's puzzle and took it apart piece by piece, since it was still intact and put theirs together using the portions of theirs that had already been completed. Once finished, the men caught up with the women and won by an hour.

Trivia:

  • The Round Hill Hotel and Villas, the hotel where the Challenge took place is also the site of a pit stop in the seventh season of CBS's The Amazing Race.

Season 7: The Gauntlet I

The Gauntlet was an entry in the Real World/Road Rules Challenge. It featured 28 cast members competing in missions with an immunity life-saver awarded to the best individual performer. Each team would then select a player from their team to go into the Gauntlet elimination challenge. This challenge was held in Telluride, Colorado. It was hosted by Jonny Moseley.

Dead Man's Drop: Two competitors are suspended 10 feet into the air on a pole. They then attempt to hold on to the pole by hanging upside down with their legs.
Hang Man: Similar to Dead Man's Drop; competitors are still suspended 10 feet into the air, only they hang on the pole with their hands and are positioned right side up.

Gauntlet notes:

  • David was sent in because he was the first eliminated in the first challenge.
  • Montana was sent in because the Real World team wanted to send a woman instead of a man in, and Montana was considered the weakest woman.
  • Tonya was injured in a mission and was consequently sent into the Gauntlet.
  • Katie was not only considered the weakest link, but the most problematic teammate.
  • It is unknown why Tina was sent in.
  • Matt was sent in because he had trouble fitting in with the team.
  • Elka not only injured her leg but was also was not considered a team player. Alas, she was sent in.
  • Steve was considered the weakest of the men.
  • Trishelle was considered a weak link and a distraction.
  • Rachel was eliminated the first in the mission prior to her Gauntlet and was thus sent in.
  • Laterrian was sent in for his disappointing team performance.
  • A tie in Road Rules' voting resulted between Sarah and Abram. Theo, who won the lifeshield, decided to send in Abram, for he felt Sarah's previous four Gauntlet wins have been more beneficial to the team than anything Abram has done.
  • Irulan volunteered herself into the Gauntlet.
  • Theo (RW) was sent in because Alton felt Coral was more deserving of staying in the final mission.

Memorable Moments:

  • Sarah was sent to the Gauntlet five times and won all five, defeating two men in the process. Although teammate Adam felt that the Gauntlet was where Sarah did her best, and stated that he would vote into the Gauntlet every time if he could, her constantly being sent into the Gauntlet was a source of emotional pain for Sarah, particularly when she beat opponents that she liked. She crowned herself "Queen of the Gauntlet".
    • She defeated David in Episode 2 (Episodes 1 and 2 were aired back-to-back) in the "Dead Man's Drop" challenge, which involved contestants hang upside-down over the pool.
    • She defeated Matt in Episode 7 in "Dead Man's Drop".
    • She defeated Trishelle in Episode 10 in the "Perfect Fit" challenge, which involved using puzzle pieces floating in the pool. (Interestingly, Trishelle had beaten Steve the previous episode in the same game, despite the fact that puzzles were a perceived weakness of hers.)
    • She tearfully defeated her best friend, Rachel in Episode 11 in the "Ride 'em Cowboy" challenge, which involved riding a mechanical bull.
    • She defeated Irulan in Episode 14 in "Dead Man's Drop" in the rain.
  • After Abram was eliminated, he shared a shower with teammates Rachel and Veronica in the hot tub.
  • During the show, Mike and Trishelle began dating, which had repercussions during the rest of the show and into the next Challenge, The Inferno.
  • Mike cast the deciding vote putting in Coral in the Gauntlet, as he felt he had the responsibility to look out for his team's best interest. Coral was devastated, as she felt it was a betrayal of their close friendship and possibly a result of compromised objectivity on his part stemming from his relationship with Trishelle.
  • In the final challenge, Coral was bitten by a spider, resulting in an allergic reaction on her part. After struggling, she quit, penalizing the already lagging Real World team. The Challenge crew stepped in when they noticed Coral was having trouble breathing. She was airlifted to the nearest hospital where she was treated in the ER.
  • Tonya was voted into the Gauntlet because of her leg injury.
  • Trishelle suffered a bicycle accident and needed to be taken to the hospital.
  • In the early stages of the show, Katie confronted Veronica on her voting motives. This turned into a fight that would have long-term effects in the Inferno.
  • Irulan was booed before and after she went into the Gauntlet. This caused huge animosity between both teams.
  • In episode seven, Sarah faced off against Matt in Dead Man's Drop. Irulan, knowing Sarah was distracted by loud noises, went over to the Road Rules side and started shaking a noisemaker. Veronica asked her to leave, but when Irulan ignored Veronica's requests, Veronica grabbed Irulan's wrist so Irulan would stop. This then led to an arguement between the two.

Trivia:

  • This Challenge was originally intended to be held in Newport, Rhode Island. The mansion for the site of the Challenge was already selected, the house had been renovated and there had already been website postings about the house, with its location and look revealed. Luckily for production, the Newport City Council barred production from filming there and filming was moved to the Wyndham Peaks Resort in Telluride, Colorado. Almost no one knew where the Challenge was filmed until it had ended.
  • After the final episode of the season aired, a show of the best moments (And clips from the upcoming season, The Inferno) aired. It was revealed that Alton and Irulan had been cruel to both the Road Rules team, as well as the cameramen and crew.

Season 8: The Inferno I

MTV Official Site The Inferno aired in 2004, composed of twenty cast members and took place in Acapulco, Mexico. In this challenge, the winning teams would receive a prize at the end of each mission. They would then nominate two players from their team to the Inferno elimination challenge. Unlike on the Gauntlet, there would be another challenge with an immunity life-saver up for grabs before the Inferno. Each team then got to select one out of the two nominees from the opposing team into the Inferno.

Abram Boise: Road Rules: South Pacific
Leah Gillingwater: Real World: Paris
Christena Pyle: Road Rules: South Pacific*
Piggy Thomas: Road Rules: Australia*
Mallory Snyder: Real World: Paris Jeremy Blossom: Road Rules: South Pacific
  • Piggy arrived to compete in the Inferno and can be seen in both footage and photos from the cast's arrival. Soon after arriving, she left to go home and was consequently never mentioned. Christena was flown in to replace her. The title credits reflect this, as they were filmed when Piggy was there and Christena's scenes were shot later. The official reason for her departure has been cited as "family reasons".

End Result: The final team Real World consisted of Syrus, Coral, Mike and CT. The final team Road Rules consisted of Timmy, Holly, Veronica, Darrell, Katie, Kendal, Abram and Christena. The Road Rules team ended up winning the final mission.

Memorable Moments:

  • Katie went into two Infernos and won both.
  • Katie had a huge fight with Veronica.
  • During a challenge in which competitors were suspended high atop two skyscrapers, Julie tried to pull Veronica off the rig to disqualify her while they were 150 feet above the ground, Veronica later freaked out claiming Julie was trying to undo her harness. Julie's technique trying to knock Veronica off was a legal move in the challenge.
  • During a fight with Coral, Julie challenged her to a wrestling match and Coral dismissed her, saying, “I don’t wrestle. I beat bitches up!”
  • CT and David knew each other before their appearance on the Real World. David even coached CT before going in for his final interviews.
  • CT used his life-saver to save his friend David, then sent Shane home in the Inferno.
  • This season marked the beginning of the tactic of "throwing the mission" in which the Road Rules team would sabotage their own performance in order ensure that the life-shield would go to their hand-picked recipient, and perfect teammate Katie would go into the Inferno.
    • The first time it worked, sending Katie into the Inferno, though Katie beat Julie.
    • The second time the team used the tactic, they failed to tell team member Kendal, who ended up winning the life-saver. Wracked with guilt, Kendal threw herself into the Inferno so that stronger male Timmy would not have to risk himself. Her then-boyfriend Mike was so angry by her own team's manipulation and use of her guilt that during the Inferno, he drunkenly shouted profanities and insults. At the same time, the Real World team had used the Road Rules tactic and threw teammate Leah into the Inferno. CT, the proponent of the plan, was arguing with Leah during the Inferno as well, as if to break her concentration. In the end, Kendal won.
    • The last Inferno, which was the last time this tactic was used, resulted in a tie, leading to a sudden death match, which Katie again won.
  • Leah had to be taken to a hospital because she hyperventilated during a mission.
  • Coral was automatically chosen to compete in the last Inferno because she was the only woman on the Real World team left. She ended up winning the life-saver and sending David in, who lost to Katie.
  • David and Katie ended up dating after this show.

Season 9: Battle of the Sexes II

MTV Official Site Battle of the Sexes II premiered in 2004 and took place in Santa Fe, New Mexico, New Mexico. Before every mission, each team would choose 3 leaders. If the team won, those leaders got to vote off anyone else; if the team lost, one of those leaders would be voted off. No life-shields were used during this season.

Angela Trimbur: Road Rules: Xtreme Nick Haggart: Road Rules: Xtreme

End Result: Eric, Dan and Theo are the final three remaining men. Coral, Arissa and Sophia are the final three remaining women. The men win the final challenge.

Memorable Moments:

  • After being voted off, Ayanna delivered an unintentionally humorous dramatic diatribe.
  • Mike was voted off for the first time ever.
  • Steven slapped teammate Shane during a tense confrontation during a Challenge, violating the rule against physical violence, and is only the second person to ever be sent home from a Challenge. Ayanna was sent home in the Extreme Challenge.
  • There was controversy on the women's team when Cynthia was voted off.
  • Tonya and Tina had a short-lived argument.
  • Neither Rachel, nor Veronica made it to the final challenge.
  • The men's team deliberately lost a mission, choosing to sacrifice Mark in order to guarantee Arissa, whom they considered weak a spot in the final challenge, in order to ensure victory.
  • Mark, Eric and Dan stepped up to be leaders one mission to protect their alliance and eliminate Brad.
  • There was much drama surrounding Angela during her entire time on the show.
  • Mark began a relationship with Robin and possibly Tonya. This laid the seed for the intense animosity that Robin expressed toward Tonya in the The Inferno II.
  • Kina and Randy began dating after the show.

Season 10: The Inferno II

MTV Official Site The Inferno II aired in 2005 and took place in Manzanillo, Mexico. This challenge was the same as the first, except this time, the opposing team would be allowed to choose only one Inferno nominee, who must win the lifeshield to save themselves. The contestants in this challenge were grouped into two teams of "Good Guys" and "Bad Asses."

Host: Dave Mirra

GOOD GUYS BAD ASSES
Jon Brennan: Real World 2: Los Angeles
Beth Stolarczyk: Real World 2: Los Angeles
Mike Mizanin: Real World 10: Back to New York
Dan Renzi: Real World 5: Miami
Julie Stoffer: Real World 9: New Orleans

Veronica Portillo: Road Rules 8: Semester At Sea
Landon Lueck: Real World 15: Philadelphia
Rachel Robinson: Road Rules 11: Campus Crawl
Shavonda Billingslea: Real World 15: Philadelphia
Abram Boise: Road Rules 12: South Pacific
Darrell Taylor: Road Rules 11: Campus Crawl
Tina Barta: Road Rules 12: South Pacific
Jodi Weatherton: Road Rules 13: Xtreme Derrick Kosinski: Road Rules 13: Xtreme

End Result: Mike, Jamie, Landon and Darrell were the final Good Guys remaining at the final mission. Tonya, CT, Veronica, Derrick, Rachel, Abram and Tina were the final Bad Asses remaining. The Good Guys ended up winning the final Challenge.

Memorable Moments:

  • After learning that Beth had told Robin that Tonya boasted of a relationship with Robin’s boyfriend Mark, which resulted in a public excoriation of Tonya by Robin, Tonya threw her teammate Beth's clothes and luggage into the pool after an argument. Afterwards, the Bad Ass team tried to throw a mission to put Beth into the Inferno, which backfired. Beth had also gotten into numerous fights with her teammates over throwing the mission, threw missions to the Good Guys, and tried to call Veronica out. As a result, Beth left the challenge.
  • Karamo showed little interest in a task that involved entering the water, with some suspecting that he wanted to be voted out because of other commitments. He was voted into the Inferno, and despite his defiant words for CT, who heavily criticized his apathy, Karamo lost the Inferno. It was later revealed that Karamo voluntary left the game to go home early.
  • In the fourth mission, the Bad Asses team conspired to make sure that Tina would win the LifeShield so they could send Beth into the Inferno. However, each person had to correctly count the amount of money he or she had, and due to the amount of time players had to count and the excessive amount of money Tina had, she got the wrong number, thus making her ineligible for the LifeShield.
  • There was controversy over Jodi changing her team's vote for the Inferno.
  • Landon got an unconventional haircut, shaving two mini-mohawks onto the sides of his head.
  • Derrick almost had his ear torn off in a wrestling match with Landon.
  • Tonya eliminated Julie in the Inferno.
  • CT got into an argument with Dan over Dan's loyalties and priorities, attempting to intimidate him by getting really close to him and taunting him.
  • A recurrence throughout the season was the Bad Asses’ lack of teamwork, caused by personality conflicts, which may have resulted in their loss of the final mission, despite the fact that they had greater numbers: the Bad Asses had 7 people, the Good Guys had only 4.
  • Rachel, Tina and Veronica were labeled "The Mean Girls" for their treatment of Tonya.
  • Jon volunteered to go to the Inferno after Mike won the lifeshield. He compared his decision to Jesus Christ's sacrifice.
  • This was the first challenge out of three, that Veronica was sent into a Gauntlet or an Inferno.
  • Abram defeated Brad in a very physical, football-esque inferno, and then got into a heated argument with one of his "alliances," Darrell.

Elimination Order:

1. Jon (Good) [Eliminated by Dan]

2. Robin (Good) [Eliminated by Tina]

3. Beth (Bad) [Quit]

4. Karamo (Bad) [Eliminated by Landon]

5. Jodi (Good) [Eliminated by Veronica]

6. Brad (Good) [Eliminated by Abram]

7. Julie (Good) [Eliminated by Tonya]

8. Dan (Bad) [Eliminated by Landon]

9. Shavonda (Good) [Eliminated by Tonya]

Season 11: The Gauntlet II

MTV Official Site The Gauntlet II aired in late 2005 and into 2006 with 32 contestants and took place in Trinidad and Tobago. The teams were designated Old School (Veterans) and New School (Rookies), based on the number of challenges each cast member has been on. Those on the Veterans' team had been on at least two challenges, and those on the Rookies' team have been on fewer than two challenges prior to The Gauntlet 2. For this challenge, a male and female captain were determined at the beginning of the show based on physical prowess, although one team chose to use rock-paper-scissors to decide. After each team challenge, the losing team captain would be sent to the Gauntlet, with each match alternating between male and females. Each Gauntlet participant’s team would choose an opponent.

End Result: The remaining Veterans were David, Julie, Aneesa, Robin, Mark, Timmy and Katie. The remaining Rookies in the final mission composed of Jamie, Alton, Randy, Landon, MJ, Susie, Ibis, Jodi and Kina. The final captains were Timmy, Aneesa, Alton and Kina. The rookies won the final mission.

Memorable Moments

  • Jo made her first appearance in a Challenge, her first such appearance on MTV in nearly a decade and quickly caused controversy in the first episode. She called the police to escort her out because she found being in the house with 32 cast members intolerable.
  • Derrick blew up at his team for choosing a secret ballot method for voting into the Gauntlet rather than openly stating their votes.
  • After the Rookies lost the second challenge, Cameran chose to quit the competition instead of fighting team captain, Kina in the Gauntlet. The Veterans were outraged at this, especially after Derrick and Adam L. fought so hard in the previous Gauntlet. This led to a hilarious argument between Cara and Aneesa.
  • Danny had multiple angry outbursts at his team, mostly directed at Jodi and Cara, before being defeated in the Gauntlet.
  • Jisela volunteered to go into the gauntlet and lost to Ruthie. TJ after it said she pretty much quit the game.
  • In the team meeting Ace took fault for the failure and volunteered to go to Gauntlet. He and Derrick go head-to-head in a wrestling beach brawl. Derrick stays low and powers his way through Ace to keep his role at Veteran captain.
  • While strategizing for a mission in which a team member had to pull other team members around a track in a large rickshaw, Beth decided that she should be the one teammate who would sit out, due to her being the biggest woman on the team (both teams had to pick one person to sit out). Montana, along with several other members, believed that Beth was manipulating Ruthie so that she wouldn't have to pull the rickshaw and would get immunity from the Gauntlet. The team sided with Montana and let her sit out. Beth performed well in the mission, but the team lost. Beth was voted into the Gauntlet against Ruthie, but stunned the team by beating her at the Reverse Tug-of-War, thus becoming the new female team captain.
  • Alton was hailed by one player as a “freak of nature” for his repeated success at physical challenges. TV Guide critic Rochell D. Thomas, commenting on Alton's ability to climb twenty feet up a cargo net in mere seconds, opined, “If Alton’s still in the game when this comes out, his teammates ought to call his mother and thank her for his winning gene pool.”
  • Jodi broke down and cried when she saw Mark and Robin together kissing in a club because Mark said he loved her.
  • After losing a mission, Beth quit the Beach Brawl wrestling challenge against Aneesa, claiming it was "against her moral values." The other cast members speculated that she was afraid of losing to Aneesa, who was praying for the Beach Brawl challenge.
  • Landon has now won back-to-back challenges, which are the only ones he's been on, The Inferno 2 and The Gauntlet 2.
  • Derrick ties Sarah for the most Gauntlets/Infernos. They both had been sent to the Gauntlet 5 times. (Sarah participated in the Gauntlet I and won all her Gauntlets.) In the 5 that Derrick was in, he beat Adam L., Ace, Syrus, Brad and lost to Timmy in the very last Gauntlet.
  • On the reunion show, Mark said he would retire from the challenges. He gave his bandanna to Derrick saying, "From the first Road Ruler to the last Road Ruler, I give you my bandana." Mark joins Mike The Miz and Eric Nies as the only cast members to officially issue a "retirement" from the Challenges.

Season 12: Fresh Meat

Filmed in Australia, the Fresh Meat features one team of Real World and Road Rules alumni paired with a team of newcomers to the Challenge. Two person teams will be formed, one will come from the group of alumni from the show and one from the group of new competitors. One of the main reasons for enlisting the "Fresh Meat" is the fact that no new seasons of Road Rules have been produced since 2004.
