Wikipedia:Lists of protected pages
Sysops on this wiki have the ability to "protect" pages, such that they cannot be edited except by other sysops. This ability is mainly intended for the following cases:
- Protecting the main page and copyright/license page from vandalism
- Preventing changes to a page while investigating a possible bug
- Enforcing a cool-down period to stop an "edit war"
- "Locking" press releases that shouldn't be changed once released.
If a sysop who has not been contributing to a page intervenes to stop an edit war, they may revert to an earlier revision; but should not continue editing content while people with different points of view who are not sysops are unable to do so. Sysop powers are not editor privileges -- sysops should only act as servants to the user community at large. If you are a sysop and you want a page in an edit war in which you are involved to be protected, it is recommended that you contact another sysop and ask them to protect the page for you.
In general, pages should not be left protected for a very long time, and discussion pages should be left open. If you protect a page, or find a protected page not listed here, please add it to this list.
The protected pages are:
- Main_Page (protecting from vandalism)
- GNU FDL, Wikipedia:Copyrights, Text of the GNU Free Documentation License (copyright/licence info)
- Wikipedia:Recentchanges (appears at the top of Special:Recentchanges)
- Wikipedia:Wikipedia press release 1, Wikipedia:2003 Press Release (press releases)
- Wikipedia:Administrators
- Wikipedia:IP probation watchlist
- Wikipedia:Database queries
- User:Lir
- Wikipedia:Deletion log archive/October 2002
The following are logs and cache pages which are generated by the wiki software and should not be edited unless you know what you're doing:
- Wikipedia:Upload log
- Wikipedia:Deletion log

- Wikipedia:Orphaned articles (for Special:Lonelypages)
- Wikipedia:Most wanted articles (for Special:Wantedpages)
- Wikipedia:Short articles (for Special:Shortpages)

recently unprotected pages are:

Commentary
The protected page system may be changed in the future so that all users can modify them, but modifications won't go through until a certain amount of time has passed (and/or a sysop accepts them). This would reduce the requirements for sysop intervention for useful things to happen.
