Star Fox Adventures is a Nintendo GameCube game in the Star Fox series released on September 23, 2002. It was developed by Rare and published by Nintendo.
Origins
Star Fox Adventures was originally planned for the Nintendo 64, as Dinosaur Planet, a game unrelated to the Star Fox series. The plot concerned Sabre (who became Fox) and Krystal, along with their sidekicks Tricky and Kyte (who disappeared entirely). Whether it was Rare who requested the Star Fox license or Nintendo who requested that Rare use it has not been conclusively shown, however it is clear that the game was very far into production by the time it became a Star Fox title. Rare even went so far as to release MP3s from the unreleased game, along with numerous trailers of gameplay, much of which appeared in Star Fox Adventures.
About
Star Fox Adventures uses the gameplay engine of Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Its graphics are sophisticated for its time. Also, like Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Star Fox Adventures has a day-and-night phase, but a more accurate and gradual one. Also, a language called Dino is used, and that language concept is similar to that of Square Enix's Final Fantasy X, except that the letter Y is used only in proper nouns. The game also has a widescreen mode, designed for widescreen television monitors.
Storyline
Template:Spoiler Star Fox Adventures takes place eight years after Star Fox 64 on an ancient world called Dinosaur Planet, located on the side of the Lylat System opposite of planet Corneria. It begins with Krystal, who is scheduled to appear in Star Fox: Assault for the Nintendo GameCube, riding on a CloudRunner named Kite and then entering the airship leading to Krazoa Palace. An in-game tutorial occurs during the gameplay sequence with Krystal. A dying EarthWalker, who was killed by a SharpClaw, talks with Krystal about the distress call on Dinosaur Planet. Shortly thereafter, Krystal heads to the first Krazoa Shrine, and receives the first Krazoa Spirit by completing the test of observation. Then she exits to Krazoa Palace and releases the Krazoa Spirit. Shortly after that happens, Andross discovers the power of the Krazoa and traps her, who is able to channel that power, into a crystal shaped like a Hyrulian rupee, reducing her to Fox McCloud's damsel in distress. Therefore, Krystal depends on Fox McCloud for her life. In order to save Krystal, Fox McCloud must finish what she started, which is to find the five remaining Krazoa Spirits, which is part of the object of Star Fox Adventures. Meanwhile, Fox McCloud, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare in the Great Fox and have a briefing with General Pepper, but Falco Lombardi is missing, until the final confrontation. General Pepper talks with Fox McCloud again upon arrival to ThornTail Hollow, Dinosaur Planet. He tells Fox that his mission is to bring Dinosaur Planet back together. Chunks of Dinosaur Planet were previously torn apart; the sections are called DarkIce Mines, CloudRunner Fortress, Walled City, and Dragon Rock. Shortly after General Pepper has finished talking, Fox meets with the ThornTail nearby. Fox then picks up Krystal's staff, which fell from Krystal's hands at the very beginning of the game when Krystal was riding a CloudRunner named Kite. When he picks up the staff, he hears Krystal's voice instructing him how to use it, and Krystal informs Fox that she is in great danger and in the damsel-in-distress condition. Later, he finds out he must find the Spellstones which Scales took from the Volcano and Ocean ForcePoint temples (The former temple is located in Moon Mountain Pass. The latter temple is located in Cape Fear.) He must go to the floating worlds to retrive two of each Spellstone (Fire in DarkIce Mines and Walled City, and Water in CloudRunner Fortress and Dragon Rock). After returning from the first trip to the Volcano ForcePoint Temple, he finds out at Moon Mountain Pass that in order to free Krystal, he has to finish what she has started, that is, to retrieve the five remaining Krazoa Spirits as well, as he was told by the Krazoa Spirit released by Krystal. Through that Krazoa Spirit, Fox hears Krystal crying and pleading for help. The Krazoa Spirit tells him that Krystal is in great danger and that she is depending on him for her life. At Moon Mountain Pass, Fox enters the second Krazoa Shrine and completes the Test of Combat. He goes to WarpStone at ThornTail Hollow to warp to Krazoa Palace. WarpStone tells him that he cannot warp dinosaurs, so Fox had to explore Krazoa Palace without Prince Tricky, but Tricky can still hear him from ThornTail Hollow. At his first time atop Krazoa Palace, Fox finds Krystal being in damsel-in-distress condition just before releasing the second Krazoa Spirit. After returning from the first trip to Ocean ForcePoint Temple, he is captured by the LightFoot tribe, but released by a CloudRunner. He has to complete the LightFoot Tests before he can enter the Krazoa Shrine at LightFoot Village, which is untouched by the SharpClaw tribe.
Tribes
Star Fox Adventures features several tribes, which are the EarthWalker, CloudRunner, ThornTail, SnowHorn, LightFoot, RedEye, and SharpClaw tribes.
- EarthWalker - The EarthWalker tribe's home is Walled City, which was separated from the main Dinosaur Planet, due to an uncanny force that was too strong. Prince Tricky, Fox McCloud's sidekick in the game, is an EarthWalker.
- CloudRunner - The CloudRunner tribe's home is CloudRunner Fortress, which was also separated from the main Dinosaur Planet in the same way as Walled City. At the beginning of Star Fox Adventures, Krystal was carried by a CloudRunner named Kite. Kite and Krystal got separated later at the beginning. Much later in the game, Fox finds Kite in Dragon Rock.
- ThornTail - The ThornTail tribe's home is called ThornTail Hollow, the place where Fox's Arwing lands when going to the main Dinosaur Planet. The GateKeeper of Dragon Rock is a ThornTail.
- SnowHorn - The SnowHorn tribe lives mostly in SnowHorn Wastes. Much of the SnowHorn tribe is incarcerated to work in DarkIce Mines, which was separated from the main Dinosaur Planet.
- LightFoot - The Lightfoots live in Lightfoot Village. There is a Krazoa Shrine which Fox must find in the village. By Chief LightFoot's order, Fox must complete the LightFoot tests before he can enter that Krazoa Shrine.
- RedEye - The only meat-eating tribe, General Scales put them in the Walled City. As a result the RedEye overran Walled City. The RedEye King is the boss of the Walled City.
- SharpClaw - The SharpClaw tribe is the evil military tribe who wants to govern Dinosaur Planet. Millions of years before the birth of Fox McCloud, the second moon of Dinosaur Planet crashed into ThornTail Hollow, carrying with it strange mutant creatures from outer space. Subsequent mutation led to the emergence of the SharpClaw tribe. Moon Mountain Pass, where the moon crash is located, is the SharpClaw tribe's home.
