The Marvel Comics' anti-hero the Punisher has appeared and stared in several video games, spanning in many different systems.

2005 Action Game

The Punisher is a brutal action game which stars the man once known only as Frank Castle, who devoted his life to vengeance when his family was brutally murdered. Players take control of the vigilante hero to track down criminals and make them pay for their cruel deeds. The game's story is a loose mixture of the 2004 film, as well as the 2000 Punisher mini-series, Welcome Back, Frank (written by Garth Ennis and pencilled by Steve Dillon). The story of Volition's Punisher game is by Garth Ennis and Jimmy Palmiotti, who have written and inked dozens of Punisher comic books. As in the comics, the Punisher has no aversion to committing acts of extreme (if not gratuitous) violence, and the game is designed exclusively for adult players.

NES Game

The Punisher was a game for the Nintendo Entertainment System produced by LJN Toys. In it, the player controlling the Punisher from a first-person perspective through various New York City locations, shooting various thugs, and battling various supervillians as bosses. The final boss was The Kingpin of Crime, who was almost impossible to defeat without the aid of a special rapid-fire joystick. A similar version of the game was also released for the original Game Boy with Spider-Man making a cameo appearance as he swings down on a web to free the hostages.

Sega Game

The Punisher was a game for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis produced in 1995 by Capcom. It was a port of their popular side-scrolling arcade game featuring the Punisher and Nick Fury. The game's side-scrolling format was similar to Final Fight or Sega's Streets of Rage. While the arcade version was popular, the Sega Genesis version was felt to be poorly translated.

Computer Game

In 1990, MicroProse Software produced a Punisher computer game for the DOS that was similar to the NES game.

Apperances in other games

  • The Punisher has a cameo appearance in the 1999 Activision Spider-Man game. In the game, the Punisher helps Spider-Man find Mysterio's secret hideout in Warehouse 65. He ofers to help, but Spider-Man declines, stating he wants to "keep the body-count low". The Punisher is then seen again in the last scene of the game playing cards with Spider-Man, Captain America and Daredevil. This is slightly humorous, as the Punisher does not usually fraternize with anyone, let alone known super heroes.
