Facts

Story and Characters

  • GTA: Vice City Stories will take place in 1984, two years before the events that happened in GTA: Vice City.
  • There will be roughly 70 storyline missions in the game.
  • The main character will be Victor Vance, the brother of Lance Vance, who was featured throughout GTA: Vice City when he as a drug dealing partner of Tommy Vercetti. Victor Vance was also briefly featured in GTA: Vice City in the opening scene where he was killed in a drug deal which went wrong.
  • Many sources, including IMDb, suggest that Ving Rhames will be voicing Victor Vance though this is not yet confirmed. Additionally, Victor's voice in the trailers doesn't sound like Ving Rhames.
  • Lance Vance, being Victor's brother, will play a major role in the game.
  • Victor is a 28 year old Marine who has been kicked out of the Marines and is in peak physical condition whereas Lance is a drug addicted wreck.
  • Victor and Lance have grown up poor and in a trailer park - a new section in Vice City made for VCS. It appears from the trailers and screenshots that the trailer park takes up the grassy area around Sunshine Autos on the western island. This most probably means that Victor starts the game on the western island of Vice City instead of the eastern island like in GTA: Vice City.
  • Victor and Lance buy a new mansion on Prawn Island.
  • Phil Cassidy returns voiced by Gary Busey.
  • Tenpenny and Pulaski from San Andreas are suspected to make a return according to this game art, and this might also be evidence from the original Vice City mentioning Pulaski.
  • Vice City Stories will feature more characters, mostly being new to the series.
  • Gonzalez has been confirmed to be in the game, in a mission you play golf with him.
  • The game's official box art has prompted speculation about further characters returning for the game. One of the game panels appears to feature Laura Shrub, Alex Shrub's wife, standing next to a car. Another panel possibly show Big Mitch Baker returning though none of these characters have been officially confirmed.
  • An unnamed female character is seen holding a baby during the trailer for the game, marking the first time a child has ever appeared in any Grand Theft Auto title.
  • Pedestrians on the street may comment on your success - Rockstar say it's all about having the people of Vice City recognize your power and control.
  • Besides the Trailer Park Mafia, there is a new gang called the Cholos.
  • Phil Collins will be performing onstage in the game as seen in the third offical trailer.

Gameplay

  • The hidden package system will be returning in the form of 99 red balloons scattered around Vice City. This is a reference to the hit 80's pop song 99 Red Balloons by Nena, which was also featured in the soundtrack of the original Vice City.
  • For the first time ever in a Grand Theft Auto game, you will be able to bribe policemen or hospital staff when "Wasted" or "Busted" in order to keep all of your weapons.
  • A new minigame called "Beach Patrol" is included. It involves swimming in order to save people.
  • Vic can fly helicopters and it is strongly suggested that he can fly jets. A strong suggestion can be seen here
  • The developers promise a more intelligent targeting system, which keeps you from shooting at non-threatening targets (i.e. pedestrians, or any objects that may be targets) during large enemy engagements.
  • A new addition to the Grand Theft Auto universe is the inclusion of a fairground, including rides. One of these rides is called a "Chunder Wheel", a large ferris wheel (seen here). Using the newly included binoculars or classic sniper rifle are both possible. source
  • Motorcycle handling has been improved.
  • Because mobile phones were uncommon in 1984, Victor will be making use of a pager to receive text messages. This feature will be used for Empire Building also (a feature similar to GTA III).
  • The inclusion of a silenced pistol and silenced SMG suggest that the game will feature stealth based missions.
  • Trip skips make a return (If you are Wasted or Busted, a taxi will take you back to the location where you began the mission).
  • The overall game controls are the same as Liberty City Stories.
  • The combat system has more depth to it than any other Grand Theft Auto game. The targeting mechanic has been tweaked, but the biggest change has been to unarmed combat - you can now perform grappling moves and throws, you can get on top of an opponent on the ground for ground domination, and more.
  • A brand new mini game based around Golf will be included. Apparently one mission involves trying to beat Gonzales (a returning character from GTA: Vice City) at the game. You control everything with a single button - tap it to start the meter in motion, again to stop it when you reach the desired power level and again to set the accuracy of your shot. Once complete you can return to Leaf Links to play a score based golf mini-game.
  • As initially revealed by German magazine "Play the Playstation", the game will feature a new game mode called empire building, further elaborated on below.

Empire Building

File:Media1.jpg
  • Businesses that can be 'made' are: protection, extortion, prostitution, drugs, loan sharking and robbery. Once you open a business it will act as a safehouse, or save point. It is possible for your business(es) to be attacked by rivals, so you are given the option to hire and arm bodyguards to protect your investment.
  • Empire Building is far more advanced than previously reported. Once you take over a site during a mission, the gang that previously occupied it becomes your "enemy".
  • You choose what type of business to set up at an acquired location and your choice will affect its level of success. For example, a smuggling business will perform better located close to Vice City Docks and the Airport than it will in a residental district.
  • The businesses themselves will be split into three categories - low, middle and high, each of which will require an increased amount of investment to provide staff and resources for. The small costs $2,000, medium $3,900 and the high roller $5,800.
  • Each business will come under attack from time to time, which will mean that you'll need to provide security personnel for each individual one.
  • To initiate an attack on another gang's property in Empire Building mode, you can destroy your rival's car that is parked outside.
  • Attacks on buildings require combat both outside and inside - you must first dispose of those gang members outside and then make your way into the building to kill the others. You will eradicate the rival business when the rival gang members are all deceased, and the building is damaged. It will then go up for sale.
  • You'll be able to save the game at any of your businesses, thus there will be more than 30 possible safe houses across the city.
  • Once you've chosen the level and type of business, construction will begin. The appearance of the building will change to reflect the type of work being done. The time it takes for completion is around two in-game days.
  • Once finished you'll be able to enter the building to save your game and you'll also be able to "make changes" to the business at the notice board, and your own gang members will be working alongside you.
  • The business does not run itself though and it's possible for you to take on some of the work. As an example, as the owner of a prostitution business, you can drive hookers to and from clients within a time limit.
  • The employees of your businesses can be recruited San Andreas style to provide protection and support to you on the streets.
  • Notification about attacks on your businesses comes through the in game pager. Hiring more staff to protect your business means that they will stand a better chance of defending it on your behalf should it come under attack.
  • Once you have your business set up you'll get a vehicle outside. For instance, Magazine Go > Play's brothel bought with it a "pimped out car with an engine that made a fantastic growling sound" but this will vary depending on what type of business you choose to set up.
  • Empire Building is the reason you'll keep on playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. You can put some of that hard earned moolah to a good use which was an inconsistency in Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories and it's predecessors!

Clothes

  • Victor also has the ability to change his outfits like in Liberty City Stories. He is shown in screenshots wearing various different outfits: [1][2][3]

Graphics

  • The animations are more life-like and are "a step-up from previous titles in the series."
  • New animations which give both the lead characters and pedestrians a whole new degree of humanity.
  • Loading times are faster and better than those in GTA: Liberty City Stories while draw distance is better than that of Liberty City Stories and the original Vice City.
  • An increase in the density of pedestrians, cars, vegetation, and miscellaneous objects will be added, testing the limits of the PSP.
  • New weather effects will feature in the game potentially including hurricanes.
  • Time-contextual NPC behaviour is now included meaning you will see party goers at night or perhaps office workers during the day.
  • A far richer colour palette will bring sunsets to all new levels of beauty and realism.
  • The version of the game that was shown to many leading gaming journalists showed pop-ups and fade-ins, but Rockstar Games have said that the popup of map models is set to be minimal in the final game version and slightly improved on what has been seen in previous titles in the series.
  • Explosions not only consist of a circle of fire, but also of hissing fire jets and individual parts flying around.
  • There will be a reduction in clumping (where groups of the same people appear together) of pedestrians and vehicles.

Map

  • VCS is said to be "much, much bigger than Vice City" with the implication being that there will be a wider surrounding area. More likely though, this statement refers to the amount of gameplay meaning more story and side missions etc.
  • There are new or altered locations and buildings with some landmarks half-built or yet to be refurbished to their state circa 1986.
  • There are more poor neighborhoods (slums) in the game.
  • The Leaf Links golf course will be in the game as confirmed by the game's first official trailer.
  • A new addition in Vice City is a Ferris Wheel, called the 'Chunder Wheel' which you can ride in first-person view. This is part of a fairground with other working rides.
  • There is also no more seamless exterior-to-interior gameplay as seen in LCS (there will be a slight loading time) - the player will enter buildings via floating yellow cones (similar to that of GTA San Andreas) - confirmed by a brief glimpse of one of these arrows in the background as a teaser movie is played on the official website

Water

File:1159380378medium.jpg
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories image of Victor Vance swimming.
  • Players can now swim in the game, but swimming for extended periods could cause Vic to drown.
  • The water of VCS is now much more realistic, behaving more like a real ocean with upgraded tide and current handling.
  • The water physics have been overhauled and handle very differently than land physics.
  • You can put your new swimming skills to "good" use with the 'Beach Patrol' lifeguard side missions, this increases Vic's stamina.
  • Cops can swim.

Vehicles

  • Aircraft are featured again with helicopter missions becoming common in the later part of the game.
  • A Hermes with flames has been seen, indicating that the Cuban gang may return.
  • Players can now take to the waters of Vice City with jet skis.
  • The "Hunter" attack helicopter will make a return.
  • Quadbikes will also be playable again.
  • The latest issue of the Official PSP Magazine has confirmed that the lear jet from GTA:San Andreas will return for VCS.
  • A new motorbike in the trailer appeared to be based on the Kawasaki Z II (1980)
  • Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories will include APV's (amphibious vehicles)such as the "Splitz" and the "Vortex" (the latter of which was seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)
  • Infernus- Hands down, the fastest cars on the road, unmatchable in speed and pure sleekness, definitely one to keep in the garage at all times.
  • Phoenix- Another awesome speed devil, which made its debut in Vice City originally. A home coming of sorts for the Phoenix then in GTA: VCS. Lets hope there’s plenty of street races to keep this baby running.
  • Stinger- The Stinger is very fast convertible which performs as well as it looks and sounds.
  • Regina- The Sunday driver car. This is the type of car you use as a means to find a better mode of transport. Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure there’s plenty of people out there who love it.
  • Comet- A rival to the super speed heavy weights. Just as the name suggests, it’s a mini comet, gets you where you want to go, fast. Has the pleasing, sleek body too.
  • Blista Compact- Ahh the Blista Compact. This is a great little car with good speed and a good armor level worthy of giving any gta fan, veteran or not, a few surprises here and there.
  • (Cuban) Hermes- Your typical gang car, not much more to say about it. Purrs like a cat, just like the stallion. Also roars once it starts picking up any kind of speed. Has a cool flame pattern on the front too.
  • Sandking- The juggernaut returns to its former home and glory. We originally saw the Sandking brought to life in Vice City, lets hope theres more fun to be had in it this time around. More than the buckets we had before.
  • Caddy- With the addition of the Golf mini game to Vice City Stories, it looks like the Caddy will have more of a practical use this time around, other than your run-of-the-mill killing spree dressed as a Sunday golfer.
  • Bobcat- The Bobcat is a veritable diamond in the rough, with surprisingly good speed and handling, it’s always been a secret weapon in the arsenal of GTA vehicles.
  • Sentinel XS- Your typical (suped up) ‘’Mafia bosses’’ car. Its an upgraded addition of the sentinel, with added spoiler and window shields. It also has more bump under the bonet, allowing it to tear up the road even more.
  • Patriot- What a vehicle, whether you’re looking to drive to the store, evade a battalion of angry VCPD, or simple crush a car into dust, the Patriot has got what you’re looking for.
  • Pony- A quite reliable and also sturdy van as the name suggests that will get you anywhere you need to go. With a good armor level and enough speed, the Pony won't let you down.
  • Banshee- Another juggernaut of the racing world. Up there with the fastest of them. Appropriately named, as it screeches around the streets just like a banshee.
  • Cheetah- The super fast speed demon makes it triumphant return to GTA in Vice City Stories. The Cheetah is a favourite of most players because of its sheer blindingly fast speed.
  • Stallion- A Muscle car at their best, the Stallion is a love it or hate it type car. Purrs like a cat, and can tear up the road in a league of its own.
  • New Car?-
  • Washington- Now this is a classy vehicle if there ever was one. It has average speed and strength and is good for mowing down innocent people.
  • Sabre Turbo- The God of all muscle cars, no better, many worse. It can compete with the fastest sports cars, and the toughest off road vehicles. An all around winner in my book.
  • Mesa Grande-
  • Mule-
  • Hellenbach GT-
  • Landstalker- One for off road creativeness. Try some unique jumps in this, I bet you won’t be disappointed. It is the prince of the off road, rivalled only by the Rancher, and the new Quad.
  • BF Injection- First appeared in GTA III, as ‘’that car’’ that everybody wanted to know where to get. Now it re-appears in VCS, as the buggy that everybody loves to bump down the beach on.
  • Voodoo- The Haitian gang car. Trouble always follows in its wake. That is, of course, if you can hear the sounds of trouble over the pumping bass and squeaking hydraulics.
  • Baggage Handler- Handles baggage at the airport, of course, and it isn't good for much else. Don't take it unless it's your only choice.
  • Walton- It looks awful - almost as if the designer made the first half then got bored and decided to stick a crater on the back to finish the job quicly. Really awful in general and bad to do anything with it except destroy it.
  • Cabbie- A slower version of a normal Taxi, and it has a more rounded shape. If you're looking to do Taxi missions, then get a normal Taxi instead.

Bikes

  • PCJ 600- The bike at the very fore front of every GTAer’s mind. It was our first sports bike, and will probably be our last. It will always have a special place in our hearts as long as there is a jump to be jumped or a race to be burned.
  • New Bike: FCR 900?-
  • New Bike: BF 400?- This bike appeared in San Andreas. Slightly faster with better handling than the PCJ, looks like our old faithful PCJ will be getting an upgrade in VCS.
  • Quadbike- A little surprise thrown in for us from Rockstar is the re-introduction of quads since San Andreas. This little number is a lot of fun to take off road and bump around mud tracks. Pulling 2 wheelies and jumping ramps is never going to be the same with this baby.
  • Freeway- For those times when you just feel like cruising around in style, this is your baby. This is a real ‘’Biker’s bike’’, usually the choice of any gangs if there is to be any bikers around the slightly older Vice of VCS.

Government Vehicles

  • Police- The basic Police car has excellent handling and great speed. It offers Vigilante as Side mission as always and can be seen in the classic Vice City green color.
  • Barracks- The Barracks OL is what you will see in Fort Baxter and when you have a six star wanted level an the army are on your case. It'll come speeding your way packed with heavily armed men.
  • Enforcer- If you see this, you're in trouble. You'd better be armed to the teeth, or have a really fast car, if the SWAT are as relentless as they were in previous GTAs, you're gonna need it. They come packed with Uzi's and can pose a serious threat.
  • Rhino- A tank. In GTA. The one vehicle everybody wants to get their grubby mits on. It is practically indestructible, can take tonnes of beatings, bullets, grenades and basically anything Vice has to throw at it, and still come back for more. The king among vehicles.
  • Ambulance- We can't have a GTA game without an ambulance. Strong but top heavy. It will provide the Paramedic side mission as it always does.

Water Transport

  • Jetski- One of the few (Maybe only) vehicles that’s completely new to the GTA universe in Vice City Stories is the Jet Ski, and it doe exactly what it says on the tin. Its perfect for scooting in and out of the waterways of Vice City, be it for recreation, or more pressing ‘legal matters’.
  • Squalo- Probably the fastest speedboat there is, the Squalo is perfect for drag races, but cornering can be a bit of a nightmare.
  • Jetmax-Fast speedboat similar to that of the Squalo
  • Hovercraft- Yes the well known San Andreas hovercraft returns for just the second time in GTA. Don't get over-excited though. It's not anything special.
  • Marquis- This is a decent speed decent strength sailing boat which has a tied up sail.
  • Rio- The Rio is a sailing boat with a tied up sail. It's a vey nice luxury yacht and it's relatively strong but it doesn't go very fast.
  • New Boat A-
  • New Boat B-
  • Predator- This is the police boat, which of course is used by the police. It's relatively fast and it comes with a mounted machine gun which you can operate.

Aircrafts

  • Maverick-
  • Police Maverick- Just like a regular maverick, but has a mounted gun to take care of us pesky criminals on the run from the law. As is any chopper, it’s also very handy for getting from one side of Vice to another.
  • Sparrow- Land, sky or both! Its up to you once you enter this baby! Equiped with a machine gun too, this airctraft can do almost anything!
  • Sea Sparrow- A chopper that really had no purpose in Vice, because of the inability to swim. In VCS, it should be given a new lease of life because of Victor’s newly found aqua skills.
  • Hunter- An old favourite returns to Vice, along with the helicopters we missed in Liberty City Stories. The Hunter was always the best known chopper, because of its aptitude for mass destruction which seemed to sit well with the everyday GTA’er.
  • New Heli-
  • Medical Heli- Looks like this PSP edition gets more exclusive than we had previously thought. An air ambulance, for the first time ever in GTA. With the ability to do air paramedic missions? Only time will tell.
  • Shamal (maybe?)- Seemingly, another first to the PSP generation of GTAs, a flyable plane!! We all know the Shamal from our San Andreas escapades, lets hope they will be as enjoyable in VCS.

Land/Water

  • Splitz 6- The Splitz 6 is the car that everyone has been waiting for. Yes that's right - it's a floating car. Finally we have a car we can take out to sea and it's a car of style. It can tackle any obstacle! Its strong! Its fabulas! Its ready! It has only 5 - 10% of rides end in drowning!

Radio Stations

  • V-Rock will return and be hosted by Couzin Ed and Lazlow will intern. Featured songs are: "Holy Diver" by Dio, "Round and Round" by Ratt, and "Breaking The Chains" by Dokken.
  • Wave 103 will return featuring: "Love Action (I Believe in Love)" by The Human League, "Quiet Life" by Japan, and "Don't Go" by Yazoo
  • VCPR will also return, this time featuring an ethno-centric right-wing talk show.
  • Paradise FM is a new station featuring Disco music. Songs include: "We're Lost in Music" by Sister Sledge, "Together Forever" by Exodus, and "Weekend" by Class Action.
  • Emotion 98.3 returns with a new DJ named Lionel Makepeace. Featuring the songs: "Never Never" by The Assembly with lead vocals by the wobbly voiced Feargal Sharkey, "We Belong" by Pat Benatar and "I Want To Know What Love Is" by Foreigner.
  • Flash FM returns, following the double DJ format of many of the other featured stations, with recognizable DJ Toni playing a secondary role. Reni Wassulmeier, the androgynous 1998 DJ of its Liberty City successor Flashback will play a role in the storyline. Songs include: "Love is a Battlefield" by Pat Benatar, "Destination Unknown" by Missing Persons, "Games People Play" by The Alan Parsons Project as well as "Easy Lover" by Phil Collins & Philip Bailey.
  • Fresh FM with DJ Luke will feature rap and electro beats. Songs include: "Pack Jam" by Jonzon Crew, "It's Like That" by Run DMC, and "Freaks Come Out at Night" by Whodini.
  • Radio Espantoso is back and has new songs and a new DJ. Hector Hernandaz is the DJ of Radio Espantoso. Tracks include El Malo by Willie Colon, Mi Ritmo Es Bueno by Bobby Valentin, and Mi Gente by Hector Lavoe.
  • VC for Lovers with Tina Jane features soul. Songs include: "Sexual Healing" by Marvin Gaye, "Fantasy" by Earth, Wind & Fire, and "Keep Rising to the Top" by Keni Burke.
  • The game will continue in the tradition of satirical and sexually suggestive commercials, one of them being a parody of the famous 1984-style Apple Computer commercial from the Super Bowl.
  • Rockstar Custom Tracks will be updated for this game, allowing you to play your own music once again as a radio station.

Multiplayer

  • There are 10 featured modes of Multiplayer. source
  • They are listed below:
  • Vice City Survivor - a regular deathmatch mode which you can play as a free for all or in teams.
  • Street Rage - A standard street racing mode
  • Taken for a Ride - This mode is most similar to Capture the Flag in other multiplayer games. You have to steal the opposing team's car and return it to your base. The team with the most cars captured when the time runs out is the winner
  • Protection Racket - A team based, conquest style game. When you start out you'll either be attacking or defending. If you're defending you'll have to prevent four vehicles inside your base from being destroyed and if you're attacking you'll have to take out the opposition's cars. The quickest assault on the base wins.
  • Tanks for the Memories - There's one tank somewhere on the map. The team that spends the most time inside the tank is the winner but it's not all that simple - the opposition will carry heavy weaponry in order to take the tank out, like the game's new Rocket Launcher.
  • Grand Theft Auto - A simple steal cars, sell cars mode. You'll have to grab specific vehicles off the street and return them to a location. The better condition the car is in when you deliver it, the more cash you'll receive. The winner is the player with the most money at the end of a given time
  • Hit List - One player in the game is designated as "The Mark" and they must stay alive for as long as possible with every other player in the game chasing after them. However, the Mark cannot see other players on the radar nor can they stay in any vehicle for a length of time (it will explode after a period). Killing the mark results in someone else taking on that role. The winner is the player who stays alive as The Mark for the longest.
  • Empire Takedown - Two teams, each with their own building or site. There's one set of explosives located somewhere on the level and the aim is to be the first team to grab them and deploy them at the opposing team's site. Once you're successful in rigging their building up to blow you'll have to prevent the other team from defusing the bombs while a timer counts down. When the timer reaches zero the building will explode and the winner will be declared.
  • Might of the Hunter - Very similar to Tanks for the Memories but the aim is to score the most kills and there's a Hunter (aka the "Army" helicopter) rather than a tank. Once again players will be equipped with heavy weaponry.
  • V.I.P. R.I.P. - Two teams - attackers and defenders and one player on the defenders' team is the VIP. The VIP must collect five briefcases, one at a time (when one is picked up another will spawn somewhere else) and then make their way to the escape point. While this is happening the attackers must try to kill the VIP. If the VIP escapes, the defending team wins but if the VIP is killed the attackers will win.
  • There are said to be further ''innovations'' in the multiplayer mode.
  • In an interview with Gordon Hall at IGN he stated 'Water based racing will be seen in single and multiplayer.[1]
  • In the same interview he also said: "In terms of the vehicles, there are aerial vehicles that play a central role in Multiplayer. As for the vehicles themselves, fan favorites have returned, as well as a whole collection of new ones that we are really pleased with."

Weapons

This list of weapons is probably not complete and the information is extracted from videos and screenshots. An added feature is you will be able to customize weapons with scopes, lasers, and silencers. Weapons you lose when Busted or Wasted can be reclaimed with a bribe (See "Gameplay")
