Thanks for assisting us in image tagging! We can certainly use the help.

What is image tagging?

Image tags are templates such as {{PD}} or {{GFDL}} that identify the copyright status of an image. There's a complete list, along with descriptions, at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags. Image tagging is the helpful task of finding untagged images and adding tags to them.

Why is it important?

Images that don't contain copyright information may be deleted, since we have no way of knowing whether it's legal to use the image or not. A tagged image will automatically have standard copyright text included, and it will be given a category regarding its copyright status. Further, automated tasks, such as moving images to the Commons, are much easier with tagged images.

But there's a more immediate reason to tag images. Mandrake plans to include a static copy of Wikipedia in their next Linux distribution. (See meta:Wikimedia and Mandrakesoft for details.) Images that have not been tagged will not be included. It's great that Wikipedia is being promoted in this way, and we want it to look as good as possible.

How can I help?

The links alongside contain lists of images that were untagged at the time the lists were made. Just pick one and click on the images listed. Some will have already been tagged – you can simply delete those from the list. For others, it will be obvious what tag they should get. Add the tag, save the image, and remove it from the list. If you can't tell what tag an image should get, you can simply leave it for someone else to tag, or you can tag it as {{unverified}} and remove it from the list. If you do, it's best to leave a note on the uploader's page politely asking where the image came from, and if they would tag it.

Tips and tricks

  • You don't have to be a copyright expert to tag images! Most of the time, all it takes is a little common sense. If the image is from NASA, use the {{PD-USGov-NASA}} tag. If the image description page says it's released into the public domain, use the {{PD-release}} tag. If one looks complicated, you can always skip it.
  • If it is obvious from comments or a copyright statement that the uploader owns the copyright to an image, then by virtue of them uploading it to the Wikipedia, you can assume it is GFDL. (Obviously this does not apply if the uploader does not own the copyright, nor does this apply in situations in which it is not clear that the uploader owns the copyright.)
  • If you would like to avoid edit conflicts with other people tagging images, add the following message to the top of the page you are working on:
'''~~~ is tagging the images on this page.
If you would like to help, please choose an alternative page
from the list at [[Wikipedia:Untagged Images]].'''
  • When you add a tag, you might want to use an edit summary that will attract new taggers. Here's a suggested summary:

Thousands of images have no copyright tags. [[Wikipedia:Untagged Images|You can help!]]

  • It usually works well to ask the uploader politely to tag his or her images. Here's the text used by Quadell. Feel free to use it or modify it to your liking.
Thanks for uploading [[:]]. I notice it currently doesn't
have an [[Wikipedia:Image copyright tags|image copyright tag]].
Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can
use <nowiki>{{gfdl}}</nowiki> if you release it under
the [[GFDL]], or <nowiki>{{fairuse}}</nowiki> if you
claim [[Wikipedia:Fair use|fair use]], etc.) If you don't know
what any of this means, just let me know where you got the images
and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much, ~~~~
