The Buggy Pirates (バギー海賊団, Bagī Kaizokudan) are fictional pirates from the anime and manga One Piece, led by Captain Buggy the Clown. Their captain Buggy the Clown is a former crewmate of Red-Haired Shanks and has met Whitebeard. He and his crew are currently in the Grand Line seeking revenge against Luffy.

Oda's plans for Buggy's crew were for an animal tamer and a strange swordsman to be part of the crew. When they were first designed, none of the members of Buggy's crew had names. There was also another unamed member of Buggy's crew who was dropped in later versions. Buggy himself was orginally called 'Boogie'.

In another rethink of their design, Zoro was added as a bodyguard of Buggy, but that was scrapped. In this verison there was also a Carrier pigeon planned called Hachi who was a Opo bird and he came from the Grand Line. Hachi was later scrapped from the final version of the crew. At this point in the design, Buggy remained unchanged.

One Piece Color Walk 01 also depicts Eichiro Oda's concept designs for other possible crewmembers, who didn't make the cut, so to speak. These include a fat, checkerboard-skinned man, apparently named "Big Top", and a mime-like character, apparently named "Pantomime".

Part in the Story

The Buggy Pirates are first seen wrecking a small town only to be defeated by Luffy and his crew. While Nami tied up Buggy's main body, Luffy sent his head, hands, and feet flying all the way to another island. Through a series of adventures, Buggy manages to recruit a transformed Alvida to his cause, regroups with his crew, and recombines with the rest of his body. They follow the Straw Hats to Loguetown, where Buggy manages to trap Luffy onto the execution platform, but before he can lop off his head, a bolt of lightning strikes his swords, destroying the platform and letting Luffy escape. After this event, the Buggy Pirates follow the Straw Hats into the Grand Line, but they are taking a different path than them.

They were last seen meeting up with Portgas D. Ace, who decides to help them look for Luffy, apparently unaware of his goal. Buggy is also unaware of Ace being Luffy's brother.

Mohji the Lion Tamer

Mohji (モージ, Mōji) is the first mate of Buggy's Crew. Quite pompous and at times silly, Mohji has the ability to control any animal he wishes, or so he says. He has yet to prove it in the series outside of his pet, a lion named Richie. Mohji usually opts to use him in battle rather than fight himself. He is, however, fast and agile, and very skilled with a whip.

In his first appearance, Mohji was sent by Buggy to capture Roronoa Zoro. However, Monkey D. Luffy got in his way, who eventually defeated Mohji after he burned down a pet-food shop that belonged to a recently deceased man and his still-living dog.

After Buggy's defeat Mohji and Cabaji fought over leadership of the group. They were equally matched, and fought for several hours. The battle ended when a sleep-walking Richie knocked them both unconscious, taking over leadership himself. However, Richie and the pirates were kidnapped by a cannibalistic group, but saved by Buggy, Alvida, Mohji, and Cabaji.

Mohji later participated in the attack on Loguetown. It was his job to burn down the Straw-Hat's boat, which he failed to do as soon as it started to rain. Nami and Usopp found him and Richie, but as soon as Mohji sent Richie to attack, Usopp used an egg to distract the lion. The Marines showed up, and started shooting at everyone. Mohji was able to dodge the bullets and flee the scene with the rest of Buggy's group.

Much later, Mohji reappeared with the group as they travel in the Grand Line and find a mysterious man named Ace. He was also in the TV Special that featured the One Piece characters as ninjas, and appeared in several video games. Every time Mohji appears in the series for an arc, his hairstyle changes. During the Buggy arc, his hair was shaped like a teddy bear; the Loguetown arc had him wearing a pink helmet with bunny ears sticking out; and when the group makes it into the Grand Line, his hair is shaped like a lion's mane.

Second Mate

Seiyuu: Endou Moriya

Cabaji (カバジ, Kabaji) is the second mate in Buggy's crew as well as their primary swordman who combines it with acrobatics (mostly on a unicycle) to fight his enemies. He fights with Roronoa Zoro no sooner than after being introduced and plays dirty by kicking Zoro's wounds whenever he has the chance. But once Cabaji is knocked off his unicycle, he is easily defeated by Zoro's 'Oni Giri' which cuts open his chest.

After Buggy's crew was defeated by Luffy, he fought with the 'other' first mate Mohji for the title for the next captain--both were knocked out by a sleepwalking Richie, who gained the title (though lost it just as quick). However, he returned to his former position when Buggy resurfaced.

During the Loguetown attack, Cabaji accompanied Buggy and Alvida to fight against the Straw Hats and Navy. However, despite wanting to have a rematch with Zoro, he didn't get a chance to do so.

Attacks

  • Kyokugi! Kaji Oyaji (曲技! 火事おやじ, Acrobatics! Old Fire Geezer) / (Blazing Breath): Cabaji breathes fire.
  • Kyokugi! Yukemuri Satsujin Jiken (曲技! 湯けむり殺人事件, Acrobatics! Murder Case in the Hot Spring's Steam) / (Extreme Wrath at the Steambath): By spinning his sword around quickly, a cloud of dust is formed. Cabaji then pulls a "sneak attack" on the opponent.
  • Kyokugi! Kamikaze Hyakkoma Gekijou (曲技! カミカゼ百コマ劇場, Acrobatics! Theater of One Hundred Kamikaze Tops) / (Dance of a Thousand Tumulous Tops): Cabaji releases hundreds of tops at his opponent, used as a distraction and later they have explosives put in them.
  • Kyokugi! Yama Noboro (曲技! 山登ろー, Acrobatics! Let's Climb a Mountain): Cabaji rides up a wall. Usually combined with Acrobatics! Murder Case in the Hot Spring's Steam.
  • Kyokugi! Nouryou Uchiage Hanabi (曲技! 納涼打ち上げ花火, Acrobatics! Cool Evening Firework Launch): Cabaji jumps extremely high while on his unicycle. Usually combined with his Acrobatics! Let's Climb a Mountain followed up by Wheel Stab.
  • Ichirin Zashi (一輪刺し, Wheel Stab) / (Sting of the Unicycle): Cabaji rapidly descends down from the air with his sword positioned to stab his opponent. Usually Buggy uses his Bara Bara Hou to keep targets still while Cabaji is coming down. Usually used after Circus Trick: Fireworks in the Cool Summer Breeze.

Anime Only

  • Kyokugi! Soutennenshoku Carnival (曲技! 総天然色カーニバル, All Natural Color Carnival) / (Carnival of Colors): A projectile attack where waves of several colors shoot from his sword.

Travelling Companions

Alvida

Acording to her wanted poster her name is spelled Aluvida (ep. 45)

Travelling Companion (5,000,000 berry bounty)

Seiyuu: Matsuoka Yōko

Alvida (アルビダ Arubida) was an extremely obese woman who was in charge of the Alvida Pirates Crew. She sees herself as the most beautiful lady in all of the 4 Seas; if someone disagrees, she will smash the offender with an iron mace. She imprisoned Koby to be her cabin boy after he boarded her ship by accident. Disliking filth and laziness, her crew was forced to clean the entire deck, if there is even a hint of dust she will once again smash the offender with her club.

She is defeated by Monkey D. Luffy in the beginning of the manga and anime, but she later comes back with the power of the Sube Sube no Mi (スベスベの実 Slip Slip Fruit). The Sube Sube no Mi makes Alvida very slim and makes her immune to most attacks as they just slip off of her skin. Aside from the cowboy hat she wears, Alvida looks totally different from her original form (and actually very attractive), now dressed instead in a bikini top and wear a furcoat like a cape. In Loguetown, she helps Buggy the Clown attempt to execute Luffy, but fails once more. She is currently with Buggy's pirate crew, with her own crew nowhere in sight. People used to say she was the most beautiful woman in the world to avoid being hit by her club, these days they really mean it.

Attacks

  • Kanabou/(Iron Club): an unnamed attack where Alvida smashes an opponenet with her massive iron mace.
  • Sube Sube Spur/Slip Slip Tracks: Buggy's crew sets up a ramp for Alvida. She takes off her sandals and slides down it with her Sube Sube no Mi powers and slides along the ground at about the same speed as Buggy's Bara Bara Car.

In the English dub, she is voiced by Kathleen Delaney.

Trivia

  • It is interesting to note that Alvida is the first character in the series to have eaten the Devil's Fruit after encountering the Straw Hat Pirates.
  • It is noted that since Luffy was the first man to defeat her, Alvida has become quite infatuated with him. Although he doesn't quite understand those kind of feelings.
  • Her last name is shown to be "Queen" in One Piece: Pirates Carnival
  • She is named after real-life pirate Alvida, a woman who pretended to be a man in order to lead her crew and later became Queen of Denmark.

Crew Strength

File:Buggyship.jpg
The ship belonging to Buggy's band of pirates

The crew, being one of the first to appear, is initially one of the weaker crews in the One Piece world. They were defeated by the Straw Hats pirates in their early days when only Luffy, Nami and Zoro were members and later were defeated in Loguetown by the the Straw Hats and the Marines. It is possible, however, that they have grown in strength since then. One hint of this is that in Loguetown, Cabaji unveils a new technique to take out several of the Marines. Another hint that they probably became stronger is that although most average pirate crews simply cannot survive on the Grand Line, they seem to be perfectly capable of operating on it. Also, the fact that thier crew currently consists of not one, but two Devil Fruit users, Buggy and Alvida, the former of the two having the experience of sailing on the Grand Line once before, puts Buggy's Band of Pirates on par with most other Grand Line crews. Not only that, Buggy's crew might be able to go further into Grand Line, now that they have the protection of the extremely powerful and feared Portgas D. Ace.
