Belsen trials

The Belsen Trial began in a Luneberg courtroom on September 17 1945 against 44 former SS men, women and kapos (prisoner functionaries).
The prosecuting country at this trial was Britain. The most notorious accused were Irma Grese, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Josef Kramer and Fritz Klein. The trial lasted until November 17 1945 when the verdicts were pronounced.
- Josef Kramer, Fritz Klein, Peter Weingartner, Franz Hossler, Juana Bormann, Irma Grese, Elisabeth Volkenrath, Karl Flrazich, Franz Stofel, and Wilhelm Dorr were sentenced to death by hanging.
- Deputy wardress Herta Ehlert, Otto Clesson, Heinrich Scherier, kapo Helena Kopper, and Vladislaw Ostrowoskiwas were sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
- Kapo Hildegard Lohbauer, and guards Ilse Forster, Herta Bothe, Irene Hascke, Gertrud Sauer, Johannes Roth, Anna Hempel, Stanislaw Staroska, and Antoni Aurdzeig were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
- Gertrude Feist, and Medislaw Burgraf were sentenced to 5 years, Freida Walter to 3 years, and Hilde Lisiewitz to one year.
- George Kraft, Josef Klippel, kapo Ilse Lothe, Oscar Schmedidzt, Fritz Mathes, Karl Egersdorf, Walter Otto, Eric Barsch, Ignatz Schlomoivicz, Ida Forster, Klara Opitz, Charlotte Klein, Hildegard Hahnel, and Anton Polanski were acquitted. One defendant, Ladislaw Gura fell ill during the trial, and so he was not charged.
All the executions were carried out on December 13 1945 by hanging at Hameln Prison in nearby Celle.
