Utah Phillips is a progressive, even radical, singer, storyteller, and poet. He describes the struggles of trade unions and the power of direct action. He had told audiences about the International Workers of the World, known as the IWW and the Wobblies for years.

He was a mentor to Kate Wolff. He has recorded songs and stories with Rosalie Sorrels on a CD called The Long Memory, originally a college project from Montana. Ani deFranco has recorded a CD with him.
