Altay SK is a Turkish football club based in İzmir. The black and white team colours represent the pain and honesty of the Turkish people.
History
Altay was founded on 16 January 1914 with the intention to unite Turkish nationals under sporting activities to compete with the minorities' football teams in İzmir. The Turkish politicians of the time supported Altay and Celal Bayar, later president of Turkey, was involved in the founding of the club. In 1918 Altay played against Italian club Garibaldi beating them 10-0. That victory was important to the Turkish community, because the Italians were one of the occupying forces in İzmir. After that defeat the Italians withdrew all their sporting activities from İzmir and Garibaldi was shut down by the Italian consul.
Many of Altay's players and supporters fought in the Turkish War of Independence. After the war, Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish republic, gave his Supreme Commander Fahrettin Paşa the surname "Altay" to honor these people. He also visited the club.
