Harrisonburg is a city located in the State of Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 40,468. Harrisonburg is located in the Shenandoah Valley and is home of James Madison University and Eastern Mennonite University.

Geography

The city has a total area of 46 km2 (18 mi2). 45 km2 (18 mi2) of it is land and 0 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.17% water.

Demographics

As of 2000, there are 40,468 people, 13,133 households, and 6,448 families residing in the city. The population density is 890/km2 (2,304/mi2). There are 13,689 housing units at an average density of 301 persons/km2 (780 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 84.84% White, 5.92% African American, 0.19% Native American, 3.11% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 3.35% from other races, and 2.57% from two or more races. 8.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,133 households out of which 23.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.40% are married couples living together, 9.30% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 50.90% are non-families. 28.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city, the population is spread out with 15.40% under the age of 18, 40.90% from 18 to 24, 21.20% from 25 to 44, 13.20% from 45 to 64, and 9.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 23 years. For every 100 females there are 90.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.50 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,949, and the median income for a family is $45,159. Males have a median income of $29,951 versus $22,910 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,898. 30.10% of the population and 11.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 18.70% are under the age of 18 and 11.40% are 65 or older.
