A dart is a free flying top containing the payload of a sounding rocket. The dart has a very well aerodynimacally designed form and flew after the launch stage is burned out on its own in the height. Therefore it is seperated after the burnout of the launch stage from it. Some sounding rockets were built with and without dart. The versions without dart can transport more payload but reach less height.
