Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2 (transl. Stay with me, my love 2) is an Indian television drama series, produced under Rashmi Sharma Telefilms on StarPlus.[2] It serves as sequel to the series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya and based on Star Jalsha's Bengali series Ke Apon Ke Por starring Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar.[3][4] It premiered on 19 October 2020.[5]

Plot

After Ramakant and Sita's marriage in Saath Nibhaana Saathiya, the story takes a leap of 9 months.

The series opens with Gopi missing Ahem (who died 5 years ago in Saath Nibhaana Saathiya) tremendously on his birthday, whereas Kokila decides to visit her brother Praful Desai's home, who is a rich man based in Surat. The family consists of Praful; his kind wife, Jamna; his wicked sons Pankaj, Chetan except for Anant; and the former two's spouses, Kanak and Hema and Hema's brother, Sagar. Apart from all of them, there is Gehna an innocent, hard-working, and kind-hearted girl who works as a maid of the house who does every household work for the Desais but still feels humiliated every time. She also keeps getting harassed by Sagar, Hema's brother, who is secretly infatuated with Gehna.

Elsewhere, it is revealed that Ahem never died. Gopi senses Ahem's presence and keeps researching about him. She asks Gehna about him and Gehna reveals that she rescued Ahem, five years ago and that Ahem lost his memory after his car accident. Since then, they called him Gopi after seeing the tattoo with Gopi's name on his hand. For the past five years, he has been training with wrestlers. Gopi finds many hints that Ahem is alive and decides to visit Ahem's wrestling session. After visiting the session, she gets confronted by Ahem for following him around everywhere. Gopi goes back home thinking of how to prove that Gopi Kaka is actually Ahem. After the Modis and Desais celebrate Navratri Puja, Kokila, Hetal and Urmila leave to visit Hetal's relations. Gopi disguises herself and tells Gopi Kaka (Ahem) that she is Ahem Singh Garodia. She figures that the only way to bring back Ahem's memory, is to talk to him about his past. While Gehna starts to realize that she is developing feelings for Anant, Sagar barges into Gehna's bedroom to molest her. Luckily, Anant walks in and saves Gehna.

Production

Development

In July 2020, Devoleena Bhattacharjee signed the contract for the new season with the production under plans since a year before.[6][7] Admist this, the rap by Yashraj Mukhate released on 21 August 2020 went viral and the re-run of the series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya during the Coronavirus lockdown was garnering good ratings which made the makers to immediately start production of the new season of the series and released the first promo on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi Modi while the casting was not even started.[8]

Saathiya has been a talking point since its launch in 2010. Even after it ended, it remained on top of my mind and we came up with some ideas on how we could take it forward. During the lockdown, its reruns were widely watched and that made us believe this is a good time to bring it back with a new season. Its recall value is still very strong. There will be many new characters and a twist in the storyline, but it will remain a family show and be driven by relationships. We were working on a new storyline when his video came out and went viral, assuring us that we are on the right path.

— Producer Rashmi Sharma, [9]

The first promo of the series was released on 31 August 2020 featuring Bhattacharjee reprising her role of Gopi Modi from the former season.[10] In the next promo released on 1 October 2020, Bhattacharjee introduced Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar as the lead characters Gehna and Anant.[11]

Casting

With the release of first promo, Bhattacharjee, Rupal Patel and Mohammad Nazim were confirmed reprising their roles of Gopi, Kokila and Ahem.[12][13][14] Vishal Singh confirmed being approached for reprising their role of Jigar but did not confirm his entry.[15] Rucha Hasabnis denied to reprise her role Rashi Modi in the new season.[16]

On 13 September 2020, Sneha Jain and Harsh Nagar were confirmed as the main leads Gehna and Anant.[17] Soon, with the first look of the series, Vandana Vithlani, Swati Shah and Manish Arora were confirmed reprising their roles of Urmila Shah, Hetal Modi and Parag Modi.[18] Besides Jay Pathak, Akanksha Juneja, Nadia Himani, Prakash Vaghela, Aliraza Namdar and Anuradha Kanabar were cast.[19][20]

Reception

Critics

The Times of India reviewed, "Ahem's mysterious presence in Gopi's life, Kokila's sass and injustice towards Gehna will keep you hooked."[21]

India Today criticized the launch of the new season as unnecessary and on the other hand criticizing the former season saying, "During the course of seven years, the show took three major leaps - eight years, 10 years and four years. That is 22 years in total. Yet they've something left to tell the audience? Needless to say, how the show turned to be ridiculous on several occasions. Saath Nibhaana Saathiya tried to be progressive but the show was regressive to the core."[22]

Ratings

The premiere episode on 19 October 2020 garnered a good TRP of 2.8 while averaging 2.2 in that week with 5.67 million impressions in Hindi GEC urban occupying third position and 8.16 million impressions overall occupying fifth position in Hindi GEC.[23][24][25]
