The BFG is a children's book by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. It is about an orphan girl called Sophie (thought to have been inspired by Dahl's granddaughter Sophie Dahl) who finds herself in a land full of giants.

The BFG ("Big Friendly Giant") himself doesn't eat children. Sophie becomes the BFG's friend and they work to rid the world of the nasty human-eating giants.

In the computer game DOOM and its sequels, the BFG-9000 (BFG standing for "Big Fucking (or Fragging) Gun") is a massive plasma weapon; the most powerful in the game, capable of destroying nearly any player or enemy with one hit. Most subsequent first person shooters implemented similar weapons, but few of them were quite as notorious or ridiculous as the BFG-9000.

In Quake II, the BFG makes an appearance as the BFG10k. It is similar to DOOM's BFG, but the plasma ball fires green lasers at anything it passes.

In Quake III Arena, the BFG works quite different. The energy blasts are released at a higher speed, but they still maintain a large splash damage radius. Some compare it as a more powerful Plasma Gun.
