Nikita (re-titled La Femme Nikita in some markets) is a Canadian television series loosely based on the premise of Besson's film, with the added complication that the convicted murderer (here played by Peta Wilson) was wrongly convicted and has never killed anyone before being recruited as an assassin. It ran from 1996 to 2001 and was created by Joel Surnow and Robert Cochran, who together went on to create 24. The series was cancelled after its first few seasons, but a letter-writing campaign by fans of the show resulted in it being renewed for an abbreviated final season. The first season of the series was released to DVD in 2003.
