These can be reliable sources but are not independent so cannot count as evidence of the base's notability in terms of deciding whether it should have its own article. Coast Guard BASE Elizabeth City is a major shore installation of United States Coast Guard located in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The Base hosts 5 major Coast Guard commands on its 822 acre footprint and supports a Joint use airfield agreement with the Elizabeth City Regional Airport.

History

The Coast Guard presence in Elizabeth City began with the commissioning of Air Station Elizabeth City in August 1940. During World War II the footprint experienced significant growth to support Navy and Army needs during the war. Following the end of the World War II, facilities constructed for the war effort were repurposed to establish an aircraft repair and supply center on the footprint.[1] [2]This unit, currently the Aviation Logistics Center, was commissioned in 1947. [3] In 1949 the aircraft repair and supply center commenced providing select aviation enlisted force training. In 1978 the Aviation Technical Training Center was commissioned to consolidate and oversee all aviation enlisted personnel training nationwide. [4][5]

Base Elizabeth City - The Base provides a wide variety of mission support services to Coast Guard units in Elizabeth City and throughout North Carolina including medical and dental support, electronic systems support, purchasing and contracting support, finance and property management, support, personnel administrative support, fire and emergency support, environmental compliance, and facilities support.[6][7]

Air Station Elizabeth City - Operational unit providing aviation support for Coast Guard missions throughout the east coast of the United States with HC-130J and MH-60 aircraft.[8]

Aviation Logistics Center - Mission Support unit serving as the Coast Guard's hub of aviation support. Provides depot maintenance, engineering, supply, and information technology to all operational Coast Guard aircraft.[9][10]

Aviation Technical Training Center - Mission Support unit providing technical training for all Coast Guard aviation enlisted personnel.[11]

Aviation Projects Acquisition Center - Mission Support unit providing acquisition services for all Coast Guard aviation assets.[12]

Station Elizabeth City - Operational unit providing small boat support for Coast Guard missions throughout Albemarle sound.

National Strike Force Coordination Center - Provides oversight and direction to Coast Guard strike teams to enhance contingency response operations.[13]

Community Connections

The Coast Guard has a longstanding relationship with the surrounding community, and Elizabeth City has been designated by congress as an official Coast Guard City since 2015. [14][15] In 2024 Elizabeth City, and the Coast Guard Base, were recognized as one of three Great American Defense Communities nationwide by the Association of Defense Communities. [16] [17] Elizabeth City and the Base have also hosted the the Coast Guard Marathon since its inception in 2021.[18] Base Elizabeth City is the largest employer in northeastern North Carolina[19][20] and the Coast Guard contributes about $500 million annual economic impact to the region.[21] [22]
