Template:Contains Korean text Mamamoo (Template:Lang-ko) is a four-member South Korean girl group under the management of RBW (rainbowbridgeagency and WA Entertainment). They officially debuted into the Korean entertainment industry on June 18, 2014, with the song "Mr. Ambiguous."[1] Their debut was considered one of the best K-pop debuts of 2014.[2][3]
Career
Pre-debut
Mamamoo had a collaborative song with Bumkey called "Don't Be Happy" which debuted on January 8, 2014.[4] They also collaborated with K.Will in the song "Peppermint Chocolate" featuring Hongbin and N from the boy group VIXX.[5][6] That song reached 10th place on the Gaon Chart's count of digital downloads for the week of February 16–22 and 11th on the overall digital chart for that week.[7][8] On May 30, Mamamoo released a collaboration with Geeks called "Heeheehaheho."[9]
2014: Debut, "Mr. Ambiguous", and "Piano Man"
On June 18, the group's first single, "Mr. Ambiguous", was released digitally with their first mini-album. The music video for the title track starred CNBLUE's Jonghyun, Baek Ji Young, Wheesung, Jung Joon Young, Bumkey, and Rhymer.[10] This mini-album included two previously released collaborations, the title song, and three new songs. On June 19, the physical mini-album Hello was released.[10] They made their first music show appearance on June 19 on M! Countdown.[11] Mamamoo performed "Peppermint Chocolate" with K.Will and Ravi of VIXX on the Music Bank "Half-Year" Special on June 27.[12] On July 5, the group held a mini-concert near Hongik University in Hongdae, Seoul.[13] In July Mamamoo also released an original soundtrack song entitled "Love Lane" for the Korean drama Marriage, Not Dating.[14]
On November 18, Mamamoo began promotions for the title track of their album, "Piano Man". The song and its music video were digitally released on November 21.[15] According to Korea's Gaon Music Chart, Mamamoo ranked tenth highest among other idol girl groups for digital sales, 19th among them in album sales, and 11th among them in overall sales of music for 2014.[16]
On the January 10th edition of Immortal Songs 2, Mamamoo performed a rendition of Joo Hyun Mi's "Wait a Minute." They won two of three rounds of the competition, losing in the final round to Kim Kyung Ho.[17]
2015: Pink Funky and rising popularity
Mamamoo released the music video for the song "Ahh Oop!" on April 2.[18] The song is a collaboration with Korean-American singer and label mate eSNa, who had previously featured on the group's song "Gentleman."
The group traveled to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia to perform at an event sponsored by the South Korean Embassy in Mongolia on June 13 with Crayon Pop and K-Much. The event was a commemorative concert held in honor of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties between South Korea and Mongolia. [19]
Mamamoo made a comeback with the song "Um Oh Ah Yeh" on June 19 along with the release of their second mini-album Pink Funky. The song was a commercial success, peaking at number three on the Gaon Chart, becoming their first top three single.[20] Their fancafe increased in population by 19,000 members during its promotions.[21] Mamamoo held their first fan meeting, the "1st MOO Party" in two segments for 2,400 fans at the Olympic Park in Seoul on August 23.[22]The 1,184 concert tickets sold out within one minutes after going on sale.[23] Mamamoo also appeared on a collaboration stage with their labelmate Basick for a performance on the Korean rap competition Show Me the Money.[24]
Mamamoo performed again on Immortal Song 2 with a rendition of Cho Young Nam's "Delilah".[25] Moonbyul was cast as the lead in the web drama "Start Love" (스타트 러브).[26] Solar also participated with a sunflower disguise on the singing competition King of Mask Singer.[27] Hwasa performed with Hyuna as the featuring in the song "Ice Ice" for her comeback stages.
