Oddinary (stylized in all caps) is the upcoming sixth Korean-language extended play (EP) and ninth overall by South Korean boy band Stray Kids. It is set to be released on March 18, 2022, through JYP Entertainment and Republic Records, three months after its predecessor, Christmas EveL (2021). It marked the first release with Republic Records after signing in February.

Primarily written and produced by 3Racha, an in-house production team of Stray Kids, the EP features a variety of producers, Versachoi, DallasK, Trippy, Jun2, Nickko Young, and Millionboy, most of whom the group had worked with previously. It consists of seven tracks, served "Maniac" as the EP's lead single. To promote the EP, Stray Kids embarked on the second world tour Maniac, which commenced in April 2022.

Background

Stray Kids uploaded the video Step Out 2022 via their social media on January 1, 2022, containing the group's accomplishments in 2021 and to-do plans for 2022, including their forthcoming two albums in the year.[1] On February 10, Stray Kids had signed with Republic Records for promotion in the United States.[2][3] On 12–13 February, the group held their second fan meeting 2nd #LoveStay 'SKZ's Chocolate Factory' at Olympic Hall. The second day was also broadcast via Beyond Live.[4] After the fan meeting ended, the comeback trailer was surprisingly premiered to announce their upcoming sixth EP, titled Oddinary, scheduled for release on March 18. Shortly, the trailer was uploaded on their social media.[5]

The EP's title Oddinary is a blend word of odd and ordinary. It represents the connotation that "all of us who are ordinary also have odd sides. In other words, the odd things will soon become ordinary".[6] According to a StarNews interview on March 4, Stray Kids hinted that this upcoming EP will show their "potential energy", "crazy" in the meaning of "extraordinary", and "new side",[7] while their label JYP Entertainment stated that the group "will solidify its presence and continue its surge in popularity through the extraordinary music, concept, and performance of the new well-made release".[8]

Music and lyrics

Oddinary is twenty minutes and three seconds long, consisting of seven tracks.[9] All tracks were mainly produced and written by Bang Chan, Changbin, and Han, who work together as the in-house production team named 3Racha. Other members also participated in the EP's tracks. Lee Know, Seungmin and I.N co-wrote "Waiting for Us", while Hyunjin and Felix co-wrote "Muddy Water". In addition to the members, a variety of songwriter-producers also participated, such as Versachoi, DallasK, Trippy, Jun2, Nickko Young, and Millionboy, most of whom the group had worked with previous records.[9] The first track "Venom" addresses the impossibility to escape the fatal charm that the other person has as if stuck in a spider web.[10]

Release and promotion

On February 13, 2022, after the fan meeting 2nd #LoveStay 'SKZ's Chocolate Factory', Stray Kids surprisingly released the comeback trailer video of the upcoming EP Oddinary,[5] while the three-minute-and-half main version was uploaded later on February 28.[6] Directed by Kwon Yong-soo,[11] the trailer begins with the scene of a mysterious city, showing the member Felix, who holds a padlock, takes the bus to enter a building with the neon sign "Ordinary", which later suddenly changes to "Oddinary". Felix meets the other members appearing menacingly, who attempt to corner him. Later, it shows Hyunjin whispers in Felix's ear, followed by the captions "Do you want to be Oddinary?" and "... ... .". He unlocks the padlock and pushes Felix dropping backward from a window. He looks at Felix for a moment before jumping after. The padlock has broken in front of Felix. In the end, Felix in different clothes walks to stand with the other members, showing his left eye changes to green.[5][12][13][6]

Pre-orders for Oddinary began on the same day with the trailer release in three editions on CD: a limited version, titled Frankenstein; and two standard versions, titled Scanning, and Mask Off,[14] including the Target exclusive versions,[15] alongside the pre-save from Apple Music, and Spotify.[16] The EP's track listing was posted on March 3, served "Maniac" as its lead single.[9] The concept teaser images were uploaded in two sets so far. The first concept depicts the members, wearing black clothes, standing in front of a radiograph or shadow of a head with screws.[17][18] The second concept expresses the members with black mannequin, and metal detector.[19] On March 6, the group teases the tracks via a snippet video called "unveil: track" for "Venom".[10] Oddinary is set to be released on March 18, 2022, via retail stores, as well as made available for digital music and streaming platforms, in conjunction with a music video for "Maniac", through JYP Entertainment, and Republic Records, which is the first release with Republic Records after signing in February.[2][3]

Tour

In support of Oddinary, Stray Kids announced their 2nd World Tour "Maniac" on March 6. It is scheduled to begin on April 30 in Seoul, South Korea, and travel in several cities in Japan and the United States, comprising 15 shows so far. Avenues and additional shows will be announced soon. This is the group's first in-person concert tour in about two years since their first tour District 9: Unlock in 2019–2020.[20][21]
