BetterDiscord is an unofficial open source modification for the free messaging service Discord.[1][2][3] In modifying the Discord client, it allows for various themes and plugins to be installed which augment Discord's existing functionalities, or add additional ones not offered officially by the service, such as adding a custom skin to the client, or increasing the volume of a participant in a voice call to a degree beyond what is permitted by default.[1][2][3] BetterDiscord has generally been well-received, though PC Gamer has said it is prone to crashing and exhibiting bugs.[1]

Though BetterDiscord is a popular modification and has been given mention in various publications, including PC Gamer and Wired,[1][4] its use is in violation of Discord's terms of service, which forbid any user modification of the Discord client.[1] As such, Discord officially discourages its use.[5] According to BetterDiscord's developers, users of the modification are not at risk of being sanctioned by Discord so long as they do not use additional modifications that further violate the terms of service.[6]
