Lethal Company is an early access co-op survival horror game created and developed by Zeekerss. The game takes place in a retrofuturistic post-apocalyptic universe, where players take on the role of contracted employees working for a corporation called "The Company," collecting scrap from abandoned, industrialized moons, while having to avoid traps, environmental hazards, and monsters. They have three days to meet the Company's ever-increasing profit quota.[1]

It was released as an early access game on October 23, 2023. The official release for the game is still upcoming.

Gameplay

Lethal Company is played only from a first-person perspective with 1 to 4 players selected from either LAN or online. Players are tasked with collecting scrap from abandoned, industrialized moons to meet the Company's profit quota in three days.[2] Each time the players land on a moon, a new day begins, starting at 8:00 AM. At the end of each deadline, if the player has reached the required amount, they will go on to another mission with a higher required profit quota. If the player doesn’t reach the amount, they will be released from their ship into space, killing them.

The game focuses on exploration, survival, and strategy. It is characterized by a realistic and brutal atmosphere, where player characters can face intense situations, including being chased by various monsters or fired on by auto-turrets.[3] Players must also return to their ship in time before its autopilot starts and leaves without them at midnight.

Players must monitor their stamina level and weight carried visible on the heads-up display, as stamina can be depleted by sprinting and jumping. They can gain company credits from selling collected scrap, which can be used to purchase items using a terminal console inside their ship.[4] Players can also find such items without having to buy them. Items like flashlights can be used to navigate through dark areas, melee weapons such as shovels and stop signs to fight hostile creatures, stun grenades to stun enemies when thrown, a ranged weapon called a "zap gun" that acts as a taser and immobilizes the enemy temporarily, a walkie-talkie to communicate with other players outside of proximity chat, and various ship decorations, including a boombox.[5]

The game offers eight semi-procedurally generated moons (not including the Company's dedicated moon to sell your scrap) such as Experimentation, Rend, and Titan. Each moon carries a different level of difficulty that dictates what type of creatures there will be and how many of them the player may encounter on the moon. There may be dangerous weather conditions that the moon traveled to may possess that hinder the players' progress.[6] There is additionally a rank system that depends on the player's skill and success in missions.[7]

As of version 45, there are 19 creatures the players will meet. Creatures that may serve as a decent threat include the "Thumper," a speedy 2 legged land animal that is evolutionary related to sharks, and the "Bracken" (aka "Flowerman"), a tall bipedal predator that stalks and eventually snaps the neck of its prey, but runs away when spotted. One of the biggest threats in the game include the "Jester," a creature stuck inside a giant jack-in-the-box toy that remains harmless until it winds up its box and reveals itself where it will then hunt down all players unstoppably.[8][9][10]

Development

The game is being created by indie developer Zeekerss, who had prior experience as a Roblox game developer.[11][12] It was initially announced on July 8th, 2022[13] and was released in early access mode for Microsoft Windows on October 23, 2023.[11] The developer says that they plan to finish the game within the next six months.[14]

Reception

Lethal Company has received critical acclaim on the online storefront Steam, topping the platform's Global Top Seller list.[15][16][17] The game has 100,000 concurrent players as of November 29, 2023.[18] It has also reached Overwhelmingly Positive reviews as of December 28th of 2023 with 180,000 reviews on Steam.[1]

Kelsey Raynor of VG247 noted that the game "...might not look like much given its grisly cell-shaded graphics, but fans are wholly obsessed with Lethal Company, and its gruesome aesthetic is clearly just another part of its charm."[11] Gabriel Moss of IGN said that "Lethal Company already instills a sense of wonder", and that the game’s co-op loot hunts "manage to transcend its limited content and missing systems."[2]
