William Hutchinson (born 4 August 1998[1]) is a Scottish professional boxer. As an amateur he won a gold medal at the 2016 Youth World Championships in the middleweight division.

Amateur career

Hutchinson is regarded as one of Scotland's most successful amateur boxers,[3] winning gold medals at the 2014 European Junior Championships and 2016 Youth World Championships—becoming the first Scottish boxer to win gold at an amateur World Championships.[4]

Professional career

Under the tutelage of renowned Cuban trainer, Ismael Salas, and being guided by David Haye's RingStar Promotions[4] with Shelly Finkel as manager,[5] Hutchinson made his professional debut on 20 October 2017, scoring a first-round technical knockout (TKO) victory against Attila Nagy at the indigo at The O2 in London.[6]

He scored another TKO victory in December—defeating Cyrille Joly in the second round[7]—followed by a six-round points decision (PTS) victory against Eric Mokonzo in February 2018.[8] After his win over Mokonzo, Hutchinson switched trainers from Salas to Dominic Ingle.[5]

In the following May it was announced that Hutchinson had also switched promoters, signing with Frank Warren's Queensberry Promotions.[9]

Despite experiencing a setback in his pursuit of the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles, Hutchinson has rebounded with resilience, securing the WBC International light-heavyweight title and successfully defending it in subsequent bouts. With each victory, Hutchinson solidifies his reputation as a rising star in the world of boxing, leaving an indelible mark on the sport and inspiring future generations of athletes.

Willy Hutchinson's journey to becoming a formidable force in the light-heavyweight division is marked by a series of impressive victories, each showcasing his skill and determination in the ring.

On March 22, 2024, at the York Hall in London, England, Hutchinson successfully defended his WBC International light-heavyweight title by defeating Martin Houben via TKO in the second round, further solidifying his championship status. This victory came on the heels of his triumph on May 12, 2023, against Ezequiel Maderna, where Hutchinson secured the WBC International light-heavyweight title with a knockout victory in the fourth round, electrifying the crowd at the York Hall.

Prior to these championship bouts, Hutchinson demonstrated his dominance in the division with victories against formidable opponents such as Luca Spadicini, Karel Horejsek, and Jose Miguel Fandino, among others. While he experienced a setback in his quest for the British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles against Lennox Clarke on March 27, 2021, Hutchinson's resilience and unwavering determination have propelled him to new heights in the world of boxing, solidifying his status as a rising star in the sport.
