The 15th Arkansas Infantry (1861-1865) was a Confederate Army infantry regiment during the American Civil War. There were three regiments known as "15th Arkansas", the others being the .

Organization

COL Patrick Cleburne, Commander, 1st Arkansas State Troops, 15th Arkansas, Confederate States Army

At the beginning of the war Arkansas organized some 48 infantry regiments. Most, like the 15th Arkansas, served most of the war in the "western theater". The 1st Arkansas (State Troops) was organized from state militia units which had been activated by Governor Rector in 1861 and participated in the seizure of the Federal Arsenal at Little Rock. These units were enrolled in State service on May 14, 1861 at Mound City, six miles above Memphis on the Mississippi River. Captain Patrick R. Cleburne, of the Yell Rifles, was appointed colonel of the regiment.[1] This unit was placed under the command of COL Patrick Cleburne. The unit was enrolled in Confederate service on July 23, 1861, at Pitman's Ferry, AR and was initially designated as the 1st Arkansas Infantry; however, when the Confederate War Department discovered that there was already a 1st Arkansas Infantry (Col. James Fleming Fagan's regiment), the regiment was redesignated as the 15th Arkansas Infantry, December 31, 1861.[2] The 15th Arkansas was composed of Militia units from the following counties[2]:

  • Co. A -- "Harris Guards" of Monroe County.
  • Co. B -- "Jefferson Guards" of Jefferson County.
  • Co. C -- "Yell Rifles" of Phillips County (Pat Cleburne's old company).
  • Co. D -- "Napoleon Grays" of Desha County.
  • Co. E -- "Tyronza Rebels" of Mississippi County.
  • Co. F -- "Monroe Blues" of Monroe County.
  • Co. G -- "Phillips Guards" of Phillips County.
  • Co. H -- "Rector Guards" of Prairie County.

Battles

Under the command of Colonel and later Major General Pat Cleburne, the 15th Arkansas fought at the Battle of Shiloh. Following that battle, they were reorganized and received replacements, then were assigned to General Pat Cleburne’s division as a part of the Army of Tennessee, with whom they would remain for the rest of the war. Due to battle losses, the 13th and 15th Arkansas Regiments were consolidated on December 20, 1862, just before the Battle of Murfreesboro. Toward the end of the war, ten depleted Arkansas regiments, including the 15th Arkansas, were lumped together as the 1st Arkansas Consolidated Infantry, April 9, 1865. They would go on to take part in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Battle of Chickamauga, Battle of Chattanooga, Battle of Franklin, and the Battle of Port Hudson as well as several other smaller battles.

Surrender

This regiment surrendered with the Army of Tennessee at Greensboro, North Carolina, April 26, 1865.[3]
