Name Change

[edit]

From Sir Francis Leopold McClintock <-- to his proper name --> Sir Francis Leopold M'Clintock. There is no "c" in his surname. This is evident in numerous geographical locations in Canada itself named after him, and it's not McClintock Island or Channel! Franklin Researcher 18:49, 25 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You need to find a definitive source for his name as googling "Francis Leopold McClintock" (504) and "Francis Leopold M'Clintock" (61) does not show much between them. There has to be a better reference than the Prinction one for "M'Clintock" but I'm in a rush and couldn't see one. IF there is then the article should probably be moved to M'Clintock. I also removed the Fox link as it didn't go to the correct article and I couldn't find one. CambridgeBayWeather (Talk) 17:10, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The structure of Scottish clan names

[edit]

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/help/index.aspx?r=551&560

This official British government website article outlines how Scottish clan names have variant spellings. The use of Mc or M' or Mac is mostly interchangeable and means essentially the same thing. Many Scottish families' names are spelt in different ways in different historical documents. To argue that McClintock is one or the other is not relevant to his biographical detail but to a more general article elsewhere about the malleable spelling of written language generally and specifically surnames.
