Source of the name?

[edit]

Anyone knows Why this island is called "Grand Turk" island? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 85.105.19.226 (talk) 13:24, 23 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

An experienced seaman had once told me that these islands were named so because of a big donation made by the Turkish-American brothers (owners of Atlantic Records) Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegun. Akilic06 20:55, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 11 September 2020

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: move disambiguation page and redirect base name to the island. The deletion of the disambiguation page can be raised separately on its talk page or AFD. -- JHunterJ (talk) 11:30, 18 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

– 'Grand Turk' is currently a disambiguation page. 'Grand Turk Island', which should be simply 'Grand Turk', is a main island and capital of the Turks and Caicos and far more known than the articles on this page. 'Grand Turk Island' should be renamed to 'Grand Turk', and the current 'Grand Turk' should be a disambiguation page. 142.54.207.50 (talk) 14:23, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Interstellarity (talk) 15:43, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Should be discussed first. Interstellarity (talk) 15:43, 11 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Note: the target new title is a page with content, and so it is only eligible if it is also proposed to be moved to Grand Turk (disambiguation). This request has been modified to reflect that fact. P.I. Ellsworth  ed. put'r there 00:15, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete the disambiguation page
  • Grand Turk Island → Grand Turk with hatnote about ship (likely to be its main "fame")
  • Grand Turk (frigate) is a redirect that goes straight to Étoile du Roy so I do not think a hatnote is needed on either. The vessel's name as Grand Turk was for a few years of ITV production and is not of some notable warship likely to cause confusion.
Let this not be another endless, circular discussion of what is a truly simple solution. Palmeira (talk) 15:13, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Both are at most secondary uses within articles while the island is a primary name of some importance. The ships are a non issue as ship specific disambiguation is a standard in ship article titles where confusion may exist. The existing disambiguation page covers the other uses with lengthy explanations and as parts of terms or secondary items in articles. The fairly common note "For other uses . . . see" referring to such a list is a solution. One of the often used determinations of whether terms are worth special attention here is a Google or other search. By that test the island wins hands down for the bare "Grand Turk". By the same standard the KKK application only comes up when "KKK" is added to the search. A redirect "Grand Turk (KKK)" to the KKK article suffices. The same applies to the other secondary uses: "Grand Turk (sultan)", "Grand Turk (author)" and so on. None of those applications of "Grand Turk" are primary titles. Palmeira (talk) 10:16, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Can you provide examples that approach primary notability? That are not secondary attributes, minor subsets, alias and epithet and are not ships with ship distinctive title attributes as so well established? That might help resolve this. Palmeira (talk) 14:09, 16 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
