Druid Pryde, or “the DP,” as they are known by their fans, is an American rock band quintet from Raleigh, NC, founded by vocalist Jake Verbiest, and guitarist Tommy Anzelino. In an effort to broaden the group’s sound, pianist/guitarist Matt Alien, drummer Corey Martin, and bassist Ed Merritt were later recruited. Druid Pryde is most widely known for their satirical lyrics and sometimes vulgar content. Among the more controversial tracks are “Druid Fluid” and “Hobosexual". Druid Pryde is also known for their obvious embellishment of accomplishments and stories. Music critics have appraised the group as having limited musical talent, but compensating for it with their witty lyrics, and unforgettable stage antics.

The group was launched into regional occult popularity with the underground release of a few tracks from their first album Out of the Stone Age, which is scheduled for release in summer 2007. The group is also working on a concept album entitled Druids in Space (Flight of the Druid), a release date for which has not been announced. The album will include the exclusive tracks "Scorpion in heat" as well as "Milk Me."

History

[edit]

Beginnings (2002-2005) In June of 2002, Anzelino and Verbiest joined guitarist/vocalist Dan Parker to form the Dan Parker Band. When Parker died of a drug overdose in September of 2005, Anzelino and Verbiest changed the name of the band to escape the negative stigma of his untimely death. They chose the name Druid Pryde, because of their affinity for pagan rituals, and so they could keep using the customized band equipment that Parker had purchased.

As a Duo (2005-2006) After a period of mourning, Verbiest and Anzelino started playing music again and wrote several new songs, as a simple guitar and singer duo. Playing mostly small venues and private parties, they developed a cult following of several dozen loyal followers. It was during this period that the group wrote most of the content on their first album, Out of the Stone Age.

As a Quintet (2006-present) Facing financial difficulties and failing drug tests, Verbiest and Anzelino, decided to recruit additional band members to appeal to a larger audience. After exhaustive auditions, they decided on pianist/guitarist Matt Alien, drummer Corey Martin, and bassist Ed Merritt in November 2006. With the new members, the group began experimenting with new sounds, and began writing the concept album Druids in Space, which features electronic noises and psychedelic guitar parts. Almost instantly, the new Druid Pryde received a great deal of local attention. Playing in bars and small sheds, Druid Pryde spread their name throughout North Carolina. They are planning a fall tour to coincide with the release of their first album. Anzelino has been known for his frequent stage fright and adds to the bands unpredictability with the possibility of the no show.
