Use of Caste in biographies and lists- does it require the individual's self-declaration?
Hi, request those who are watching this page to contribute to the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Caste_identification on whether mentioning a person's caste (Jati) requires that person to explicitly say that he belongs to XX caste (like in the case of religion and sexuality), or whether caste identity is objective and knowable enough (like ethnic background) to be ascertained without producing proof that the person explicitly identified with a particular caste. For example, can we identify Mulayam_Singh_Yadav as a Yadav based on newspaper articles etc., or whether we need proof that Mulayam Singh Yadav has explicitly accepted 'Yadav' as his caste (by saying, for example, something like "I am a Yadav".) Deletion
Regardless of citations and annotations, this is definitely an open-ended list, and should be deleted per the proposals at User:Sidatio/Conversations/On list guidelines. It also appears to be a "directory" and "indiscriminate collection of information", and "is practically the same as List of Nairs" per the arguments for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Rajputs Kappa 07:46, 14 August 2007 (UTC)
- No it is not. This article was kept over a year ago over a vote.

Lord Krishna a Jatt? Where did you get that from? Lord Krishna was from the Yadu clan also known as a Yaduvanshi, now commonly known as Ahirs/Yadavs. I know jatts are similar to Yadavs but Jatts didn't weren't in existence back then in Bharat vansh. |

This edit added one source (the parliamentary bio) that doesn't mention "Jat"; another (jatland.com) that is an open wiki; a third (Indian Mirror) that does not seem to mention the man; and a fourth (Dainik) that is not in English and the veracity of which I doubt given the apparent cluelessness of the contributor. So I reverted it. - Sitush (talk) 15:47, 6 January 2017 (UTC)

Request for addition of names of Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, and Mallika Sherawat
Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh was a Sikh Jat. Quoting from this article in The Tribune:
“I am no longer a Jat as you said in the book, I have no land now,” said Arjan Singh, recalling a comment made in the book, written two years ago, that the Jat in him was kept alive by the farm. For this Aulakh Jat, giving up his land is a great gesture, and by setting up a trust for the welfare of others, Arjan Singh has set a shining example in a nation where such things have become rare.
Actress Mallika Sherawat is also a Jat.
Quoting her from this article in Rediff:
Mallika chips in, "We Jats, Dharamji and I, will set the screens on fire!"
So, please add their names under Military and Cinema sections respectively.
- These can totally be added. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:17, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
Request for addition of name of Mahie Gill under "Cinema and television" sub-heading
Actress Mahie Gill was born in a Jat-Sikh family as told by her in this article in Times of India:
“ Although I belong to a Jat-Sikh family, who are known to be very conservative, I didn’t have to face any restrictions, whether it was regarding my career or personal choices."
So, please add her name under Cinema sub-heading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.98.173.254 (talk) 16:35, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

There are hundreds of famous Jats missing just because they don’t have wiki page and they have not claimed they are Jats Even Jat olympic medal winners are not there — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4053:2C9F:6C24:E57D:560:2F19:9701 (talk) 18:30, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
- This is how it works in Wikipedia. Requires articles per notability polciy, and for living person, self-identification is required in an interview (reliable news portal or video) or declaration in official tweet, Facebook post, website, etc - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 18:49, 12 July 2022 (UTC)
Original researches?
@Rudra4Real: The sources accompanying the entries of Rakesh Singh,[1] Chhelu Ram,[2] Sis Pal Singh,[3] and Munna Lal Mundel,[4] do not explicitly say that they were Jats, only mention that they were soldiers in the Jat Regiment. Though, it is highly possible, but sourcing like these ventures into original research territory, not to mention the Jat Regiment had people from other backgrounds. In my opinion, we should not keep these entries unless ecplicit sources are found. Courtesy pin @Aviral18:. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:20, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- @Fylindfotberserk Yes they may lead to conflict because Anyone can join Jat regiment. There is not specific that only Jats can join. So we Can remove it or find reliable sources which mention their caste clearly. Rudra4Real (talk) 14:25, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- Jat regiment is full single caste regiment.
- Munna lal mundel is from 9 Jat regiment and Munna lal Mundel from 2nd Jat battalion as written in sources and these are full single one caste regiment and only recruits from Jat Aviral18 (talk) 16:23, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- sorry for mistake
- Munna lal Mundel from 9th jat regiment
- Naik Shishpal from 2nd Jat battalion
- both are single caste jat based regiment Aviral18 (talk) 16:25, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
@Aviral18: See this govt source, according to it
Class Composition of the RegtThe Jats as a community started joining the British Indian Army only after mid 1857 when they were first recruited around Delhi to quell the Gurjar rebellion. By 1890’s there were sizeable Jats to form them into Coy gps. By 1920’s there were about four to six Inf Bns (then also called Inf Regts) which had sizeable JAT Troops. During the time of Independence, the JAT Regt had 50% Hindu Jats and 25% Punjabi and 25% Hindustani Muslims. After the departure of Muslim troops to Pakistan, the Regt had pure Hindu Jats troops. As the recruitment policy of the Army changed to accommodate a factor / ratio called the RECRUITABLE MALE POPULATION to provide central govt jobs on a more equitable basis across the country the number of pure Hindu Jats reduced. The Regt today has 89% troops from the Hindu Jats community and the balance are from other castes of North India.
As you can see there were/are sizable non-Jat recruitment in the regiments during British period and present. Please find sources where the persons are declared belonging to Jat caste explicitly. These should be removed for contravening WP:NOR. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:51, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
