Use of Caste in biographies and lists- does it require the individual's self-declaration?

[edit]

Hi, request those who are watching this page to contribute to the discussion at Wikipedia_talk:Noticeboard_for_India-related_topics#Caste_identification on whether mentioning a person's caste (Jati) requires that person to explicitly say that he belongs to XX caste (like in the case of religion and sexuality), or whether caste identity is objective and knowable enough (like ethnic background) to be ascertained without producing proof that the person explicitly identified with a particular caste. For example, can we identify Mulayam_Singh_Yadav as a Yadav based on newspaper articles etc., or whether we need proof that Mulayam Singh Yadav has explicitly accepted 'Yadav' as his caste (by saying, for example, something like "I am a Yadav".) Deletion

[edit]

Regardless of citations and annotations, this is definitely an open-ended list, and should be deleted per the proposals at User:Sidatio/Conversations/On list guidelines. It also appears to be a "directory" and "indiscriminate collection of information", and "is practically the same as List of Nairs" per the arguments for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of Rajputs Kappa 07:46, 14 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No it is not. This article was kept over a year ago over a vote.

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:List of Jats/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Lord Krishna a Jatt? Where did you get that from? Lord Krishna was from the Yadu clan also known as a Yaduvanshi, now commonly known as Ahirs/Yadavs. I know jatts are similar to Yadavs but Jatts didn't weren't in existence back then in Bharat vansh.

This edit added one source (the parliamentary bio) that doesn't mention "Jat"; another (jatland.com) that is an open wiki; a third (Indian Mirror) that does not seem to mention the man; and a fourth (Dainik) that is not in English and the veracity of which I doubt given the apparent cluelessness of the contributor. So I reverted it. - Sitush (talk) 15:47, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request for addition of names of Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh, and Mallika Sherawat

[edit]

Marshal of the Indian Air Force Arjan Singh was a Sikh Jat. Quoting from this article in The Tribune:

“I am no longer a Jat as you said in the book, I have no land now,” said Arjan Singh, recalling a comment made in the book, written two years ago, that the Jat in him was kept alive by the farm. For this Aulakh Jat, giving up his land is a great gesture, and by setting up a trust for the welfare of others, Arjan Singh has set a shining example in a nation where such things have become rare.

Actress Mallika Sherawat is also a Jat.

Quoting her from this article in Rediff:

Mallika chips in, "We Jats, Dharamji and I, will set the screens on fire!"

So, please add their names under Military and Cinema sections respectively.

These can totally be added. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:17, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Request for addition of name of Mahie Gill under "Cinema and television" sub-heading

[edit]

Actress Mahie Gill was born in a Jat-Sikh family as told by her in this article in Times of India:

“ Although I belong to a Jat-Sikh family, who are known to be very conservative, I didn’t have to face any restrictions, whether it was regarding my career or personal choices."

So, please add her name under Cinema sub-heading. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.98.173.254 (talk) 16:35, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

@Rudra4Real: The sources accompanying the entries of Rakesh Singh,[1] Chhelu Ram,[2] Sis Pal Singh,[3] and Munna Lal Mundel,[4] do not explicitly say that they were Jats, only mention that they were soldiers in the Jat Regiment. Though, it is highly possible, but sourcing like these ventures into original research territory, not to mention the Jat Regiment had people from other backgrounds. In my opinion, we should not keep these entries unless ecplicit sources are found. Courtesy pin @Aviral18:. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:20, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Fylindfotberserk Yes they may lead to conflict because Anyone can join Jat regiment. There is not specific that only Jats can join. So we Can remove it or find reliable sources which mention their caste clearly. Rudra4Real (talk) 14:25, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Aviral18: See this govt source, according to it

Class Composition of the RegtThe Jats as a community started joining the British Indian Army only after mid 1857 when they were first recruited around Delhi to quell the Gurjar rebellion. By 1890’s there were sizeable Jats to form them into Coy gps. By 1920’s there were about four to six Inf Bns (then also called Inf Regts) which had sizeable JAT Troops. During the time of Independence, the JAT Regt had 50% Hindu Jats and 25% Punjabi and 25% Hindustani Muslims. After the departure of Muslim troops to Pakistan, the Regt had pure Hindu Jats troops. As the recruitment policy of the Army changed to accommodate a factor / ratio called the RECRUITABLE MALE POPULATION to provide central govt jobs on a more equitable basis across the country the number of pure Hindu Jats reduced. The Regt today has 89% troops from the Hindu Jats community and the balance are from other castes of North India.

As you can see there were/are sizable non-Jat recruitment in the regiments during British period and present. Please find sources where the persons are declared belonging to Jat caste explicitly. These should be removed for contravening WP:NOR. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:51, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@HistoryviaAT: A little problematic, that is original research, since he replied to the handle @voice_kshatriya (which would include other communities) as well. Had he replied to @JAT_SAMAAJ only, then it would have been clearer. "Proud to be part of warrior community", can mean any of the warrior or historically warrior communities as well as soldiers in the armed forces. Arrangements - We should have some specific format in this regard. Typically per MOS:LISTORG, the entries are arranged alphabetically by LAST NAME. Though we can do it by birth year of the subjects. Currently, we are not following any of these. Suggestions @NitinMlk, Rudra4Real, HistoryviaAT, Ravensfire, and Gotitbro: ? - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 09:23, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fylindfotberserk, I am not familiar with this, but MOS:LISTORG mentions that the "most basic form of organization is alphabetical". It doesn't seem to mention any preference for the first/last name. I guess alphabetical order by the first name seems fine for this page because the general readers tend to look for a particular name, which will be very easy if the names are listed in alphabetical order. Listing by last names will make it complicated for them, as WP articles are based on WP:Common names which may not be known to them. In fact, many South Asian WP biographies don't even mention full names of the subjects, while the titles of others contain made-up/unsourced surnames. The ordering based on date/year of birth may also be complicated, as the date/year of birth of many subjects may not be known.
On a different note, although I am on a WP:WIKIBREAK, I tried to fix this list last Sunday and will probably try to fix it this Sunday as well. - NitinMlk (talk) 21:26, 29 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@NitinMlk: True, in many biographies, especially southern India related, the last name in question is not their surnames, thus why the subject is referred to by their given name throughout the article, besides in India, arrangements are typically done by first name officially (schools, colleges, and other places). - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 08:56, 30 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

BLP violations

[edit]

The following three entries seem WP:BLP violations:

So I will remove them till we crosscheck their sources. - NitinMlk (talk) 22:51, 4 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NitinMlk You should re add Chaudhry Parvez Elahi. Doesn't seem like a WP:BLP violation when he has got a whole Wikipedia article.[4]. He is nephew of Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi, who is already in the list, and a cousin of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, former premier of Paistan.[5][6][7] Noman Warraich (talk) 22:17, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Noman Warraich, his name can only be added if he self-identifies as Jat – see WP:CASTEID. You need to provide a source, e.g. book, news article, YouTube video, social media post, etc. in which he mentions that he is a Jat. Chaudhry Zahoor Elahi is already listed because WP:BLP doesn't apply to him. - NitinMlk (talk) 17:18, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Undiscussed page move

[edit]

The page's title has remained as List of Jats for over a decade before it was moved without any discussion to the present title. So I will revert the undiscussed & unhelpful move, as Jats is the WP:COMMON NAME. I am not pinging the editor who moved it, as they have already left the project after being topic banned for some stuff. - NitinMlk (talk) 22:03, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Page needs WP:ECP

[edit]

RegentsPark, the semi-protection has failed to stop the disruption on this page. The current level of protection is a cakewalk for the type of disruptive WP:SPAs and sock puppets who visit it. So it needs to be extended-confirmed protected indefinitely, just like multiple other similar lists. - NitinMlk (talk) 23:59, 5 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Too less people are shown in the famous people list.

Many singers and many sports and army personalities are not available there in the list of famous Jat people. Why is that.? Some of the rulers are also not their like King Porus and Hari Singh NALWA. Wiki should look into it and do the favourable changes. Vikaspeeploda (talk) 04:38, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please provide reliable sources that support the change you want to be made. The BLP article on him included a reference to Jat origins, but that was unsourced. I have removed it there, and he will accordingly not be added here either. Actualcpscm (talk) 09:26, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Can you clarify about the requirement of the sources? Haryanvi Jedi (talk) 15:05, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Haryanvi Jedi: First of all Jatland.com is not considered reliable in Wikipedia. Second, news sources that mention them as Jats as third person is not enough. There is a WP:CONSENSUS at WP:INB according to which caste of living persons need to be self-identified, that is they have to say something like 'I'm a Jat' in an interview, that's only how it becomes valid here. For dead people, a reliable WP:Independent source such as a reliable news portal is enough. For example, Sidhu Moosewala's name got incuded here after he died, and we got many news sources caliming that he is a Jatt Sikh. Hope it is clear. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 16:51, 4 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please add name of Kanha Rawat (Chhonkar) in warrior, chieftain & rulers section in the following manner: Kanha Rawat(Chhonkar),a Hindu Jat of Chhonkar clan bearing title of Rawat, who fought against the oppression of Aurangzeb's Islamic rule and his policy of persecuting Hindus. He was buried alive in Delhi by Aurangzeb because he refused to convert to Islam. 45.249.85.8 (talk) 17:52, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"Jatland" and "Wikipedia" articles are not reliable sources per WP:UGC. Find WP:HISTRS, WP:RS compliant sources - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 19:17, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
These are only sources I could find. Please it's my request do a research on my behalf and add this. He is my ancestor. He is a legend of Palwal district. 45.249.85.8 (talk) 19:23, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia is bound by its guidelines and policies, so no, can't add. But most importantly Kanha Rawat doesn't have an article in Wikipedia. We can't add an entry to a list of notable people if we do not know about the person. So you have to draft an article of him per WP:WTAF WP:GNG and get it reviewed/passed, establishing WP:Notability in the process. After that we can look for reliable sources on his background (Jat). - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 19:53, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Misri/Egyptian and Ma'danid Zuttis

[edit]

Add: Al-Sari ibn al-Hakam and his sons Muhammad and Ubaydallah. They formed a temporary Zutti (Jatt) dynasty in Egypt. This was the first attempt at an independent Egyptian Muslim polity, heralding future Turkic attempts.

Add: Ma'danid dynasty. They were among the first regional Muslim polities in India, along with the Arab Habbarids and Multan Emirate. Al-Masudi reports that the region was governed by Jatts during their rule, and they used the title of Maharaja, suggesting Jatt origins. Their descendants are likely the Kaikan (Kekan) or Makran (Makad) Jatts. OperativePhase33 (talk) 21:28, 18 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done For living people, there is a policy WP:CASTEID, per which we can only list names if they have self-identified their caste. For dead people, WP:RS sources will do, but not blog, forums or Wiki-like sources. The current list abide by the said policies. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:16, 25 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

dividing the page into sikh Jat and other jat communities

[edit]

I believe this page is mixed enough with pakistan's, Punjab and other jat communities. Majorly Punjab sikh should have a different page and must be removed from here. what are your opinions? HistorianV (talk) 02:22, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Opposing such a change. Otherwise we have to do that with every caste list article. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:50, 11 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So, you don't oppose the base idea just accepting that it's difficult to do right? HistorianV (talk) 01:15, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I can spend a day to first seperate Sikhs from the List and if all goes well we can edit the Jat page. HistorianV (talk) 10:27, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Well I'm clearly opposing it. Do not want loads of caste list sub-articles divided based on region, language and religion, when the existence of mega lists like this one were questioned at WP:INB before, but didn't come to fruition. You could propose at WP:INB, discussion pertaining to it will affect all similar lists. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:25, 12 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Its non of your business dont encourage WP:POV to subdue the integrity of Jats Wikipedia policy are against intruder like you indeed@HistorianV Standardmate (talk) 05:25, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Standardmate: Anyone can suggest changes, staying within the limits of WP:TALK#USE ofcourse, and that doesn't make them 'intruders'. Note that nobody WP:OWNS Wikipedia articles and please maintain WP:CIVIL. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 11:29, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
for movement of time i don't want to bother him anyway but he suspiciously editing on wikipedia with same series and intrusive behaviour to encourage his own WP:POV which is against the morality of Wikipedia Core principal value Standardmate (talk) 11:38, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am updating new changes from books I read and new references used in those articles only. Talk like a civil Man. HistorianV (talk) 13:50, 14 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
