Halyna Hutchins (1979[1] – 21 October 2021) was an Ukrainian-born American[2] cinematographer credited with work on more than 30 films, short films and TV miniseries, including the films Archenemy, Darlin', and Blindfire.[3]
Biography
Hutchins grew up on a Soviet military base in the Arctic. Prior to her work in cinematography, Hutchins worked as a journalist in Eastern Europe.[2][4][5] She moved to the United States to focus on film-making, taking on roles in production and fashion photography.[2] From 2013 to 2015, she studied at the American Film Institute Conservatory, where Stephen Lighthill was a mentor.[2] Her thesis project, Hidden, made with director Rayan Farzad, was screened at the Camerimage International Film Festival.[2]
In 2018, she was one of the first eight female cinematographers participating in the Fox DP Lab program, which was established to provide greater opportunities for women cinematographers.[6] In 2019, she was named one of the "10 up-and-coming directors of photography who are making their mark" by American Cinematographer.[7] She was director of photography on Adam Egypt Mortimer's 2020 film Archenemy.[8]
Death
On 21 October 2021, Hutchins was working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, as director of photography on the set of Rust, when actor Alec Baldwin discharged a blank-loaded gun, seriously injuring her and director Joel Souza. Hutchins died from her injuries enroute to a hospital in Albuquerque.[9] She was 42.
