Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy
Speedy renaming and speedy merging
Categories may be listed here if they fall under the criteria specified below. Deletion and de-listing may occur after 48 hours if there are no objections. They must be tagged with {{subst:cfr-speedy|new name}} so that users of the categories are aware of the proposal. This delay is to allow for objections over correct spelling, etc. to be made and to ensure that items are not listed here that do not meet the criteria.
Categories that qualify for speedy deletion (per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, e.g. "patent nonsense", "recreation", categories that have been empty for four days) can be tagged with the regular speedy tags, such as {{db|reason}}, and no delay is required for these.
Contested requests can be removed from this list after 48 hours. If the nominator wants to continue the process they need to submit the request as a regular CfD using the instructions above.
Speedy criteria
Criteria for speedy deletion, renaming, or merging are strictly limited to: From 20 November 2009 to 4 December 2013 the policy page Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion transcluded the criteria for deletion of categories from a discussion page instead of having them directly coded in the policy page. To see the history of that section of the speedy deletion policy during that period, see the editing history of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy/Criteria. For current discussion page for the same material see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Speedy#Speedy criteria.
- A nomination to merge or rename, brought forward as a full CfD, may be speedily closed if the closing administrator is satisfied that:
- The nomination clearly falls within the scope of one of the criteria listed above, and;
- No objections have been made within 48 hours of the initial nomination.
- If both these conditions are satisfied, the closure will be regarded as having been as a result of a speedy nomination. If any objections have been raised then the CfD nomination will remain in place for the usual 7 day discussion period, to be decided in accordance with expressed consensus.
Add requests for speedy renaming here
If the category and desired change do not match one of the criteria in C2 listed above, do not list it here. Instead, list it in the main CFD section.
If you are in any doubt as to whether it qualifies, do not list it here.
Use the following format:
- * [[:Category:OLD name]] to [[:Category:NEW name]] ~~~~
Don't forget to tag the category with {{subst:Cfr-speedy|newname}}
Please add new entries at the top of the list and sign and date stamp your entries with ~~~~.
A request may be completed if it is more than 48 hours old; that is, the time stamp shown is 06:40, 13 November 2024 (UTC) or earlier.

- Category:Barcelona province to Category:Barcelona Province — C2C - All other categories for individual provinces in Spanish-speaking world contained in the tree Category:Provinces by country show that it is the Wikipedia naming convention to use a form like Barcelona Province when the Spanish proper full name is like "Provincia de Barcelona". The prove for the application of the naming convention can be found in the following categories: Category:Provinces of Argentina, Category:Provinces of Bolivia, Category:Provinces of Chile, Category:Provinces of Colombia, Category:Provinces of Gran Colombia, Category:Provinces of Costa Rica, Category:Provinces of Cuba, Category:Provinces of the Dominican Republic, Category:Provinces of Ecuador, Category:Provinces of Equatorial Guinea, Category:Provinces of Panama, (no categories within Category:Provinces of Peru, Category:Provinces of the Spanish Empire), Category:Provinces of Venezuela. Same Wikipedia naming convention for linguistically and/or geographically related Portuguese language items apply to Category:Provinces of Portugal, Category:Provinces of Angola, Category:Provinces of Mozambique. The only ones that inconsistently use lower case "province" are the ones from Spain listed here. TopoChecker (talk) 16:22, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- Actually the other categories for Spanish provinces use a lower-case P. Although, shouldn't it be Category:Province of Barcelona like the article? The same goes for all the other categories named after Spanish provinces. McLerristarr | Mclay1 16:30, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- The others are proposed for change below. Shouldn't the articles be changed to match the other Spanish-speaking world province articles? Then we would have it all consistent, all articles and all categories? TopoChecker (talk) 18:06, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- [EC] Looking at other categories is not by itself a sufficient basis for identifying a Wikipedia convention on category names. It's not clear that the "convention" you perceive is truly a convention arrived at by consensus. One generally established convention at Wikipedia is to name categories consistent with the names of main articles in those categories. In some of the other categories you cite, the articles for provinces have names in the form Azua Province and Niassa Province, so the category names are consistent with the article names. As you note, that is not the case for the main articles for provinces in Spain, where the article names are in the form Province of Barcelona. Unless there's a past discussion somewhere in the archives that supports your theory on the "convention", I'd like to see a discussion of this proposal that can arrive at consensus agreement on a convention to follow. --Orlady (talk) 16:36, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
- C2C "established naming conventions" - it does not talk about how the convention for the other items was reached. Agree with the article names. Shouldn't these be changed to match the other Spanish-speaking world province articles? TopoChecker (talk) 18:06, 9 January 2011 (UTC)

- Oppose this and all of the other "breeds originating" articles. Animal breeds may be closely associated with a given nation, but given shifting animal movement and shifting national boundaries, the animal breed may have "develped" elsewhere. In this case, many animals associated with Poland may have "originated" when the nation was part of Russia. We have had some significant edit wars over the "origin" of eastern European animal breeds and would prefer to keep the existing category. I recommend the same for all other animal breed articles so tagged. Montanabw(talk) 20:30, 5 January 2011 (UTC)
- I simply don't understand why we would want to retain the parents in one format and the subcategories in a different format. This is what C2C is meant to resolve. Oh well—full discussion here. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:35, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

- It looks to me like the "of Virginia" is only used when there's another family of that name from somewhere else. I'm not sure this is a C2C scenario.--Mike Selinker (talk) 14:24, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- There are individuals all over Wikipedia with these surnames, however, these categories have been used to label members of, or descendants of, particular prominent "first families". The precedent has been set in the following:
- Category:Bolling family to Category:Bolling family of Virginia
- Category:Byrd family to Category:Byrd family of Virginia
- Category:Custis family to Category:Custis family of Virginia
- Category:Fitzhugh family to Category:Fitzhugh family of Virginia
- Category:Harrison family to Category:Harrison family of Virginia
- Category:Lee family to Category:Lee family of Virginia
- Category:Page family to Category:Page family of Virginia
- Category:Randolph family to Category:Randolph family of Virginia
- I can understand the hesitation, though, and I can take this the regular route if you prefer. Cheers! Location (talk) 16:15, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Probably for the best. I'm not necessarily opposed to this. I just don't think we've set the precedent for this type of category.--Mike Selinker (talk) 17:15, 7 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, Mike. Does the closer automatically take this to the regular CfD, or is that something I am to do? Keep me posted. Location (talk) 05:00, 3 January 2011 (UTC)

- Huge list: I need advice on what to with these. I am not going to go through all of them to tag; that's excessive even for me. They are all in the form of "X aircraft YEAR-YEAR" with a hyphen rather than endash per WP:DASH. They should probably be in the form of "X aircraft (YEAR–YEAR)", but at the very least, the hyphens should be replaced. Can these be tagged by a bot? —Justin (koavf)❤T☮C☺M☯ 21:56, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- My advice: Don't bother tagging. Since it's just an en-dash change, leave it here till the 48 hours pass, and then put the entire list of categories on Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large (and tell User:Cyde that you've done so). I might not add the parentheses, because of the very careful changes you will have to make to Template:Airnd and all the others of its type.--Mike Selinker (talk) 02:27, 18 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose such a large change for what is a trivial reason, cats have worked fine for years and nobody in the real world would notice the difference. MilborneOne (talk) 15:58, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - All this change will do is make things harder for editors with absolutely no real world benefits.Nigel Ish (talk) 16:05, 20 December 2010 (UTC)
- Oppose - we don't have dashes on our keyboards, but hyphens. We should use what is readily available on a keyboard without resorting to html codes etc unless there is a very good reason, which there isn't here. Mjroots (talk) 06:22, 21 December 2010 (UTC)

Ready for deletion
Check Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion for out of process deletions. In some cases, these will need to be nominated for discussion and the editor who emptied the category informed that they should follow the WP:CFD process.
Once the renaming has been completed, copy and paste the listing to the Ready for deletion section of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Manual.
