Muirs Highway or Muir Highway?

edit

I'm a little confused about the name of this Highway. Is it Muirs Highway or Muir Highway? The likes of Google and OpenStreet map call it Muir Highway, not Muirs, as does my HEMA WA Road map, as does the likes of NationalMap. Is the current name really correct? early proposals of the naming= singular - "NAMING OF ROADWAY". The Southern Sentinel. Vol. 20, , no. 1569. Western Australia. 19 August 1954. p. 1. Retrieved 5 October 2024 – via National Library of Australia.{{cite news}}: CS1 maint: extra punctuation (link)

Howqever, from my collection, to hand, so to speak:

Street Smart Travellers Atlas 1st edition - 1994 - has Muirs
Street Smart Travellers Atlas 3rd edition - 1998 - has Muirs
Street Smart Travellers Atlas 7th edition (in combination with Hema) - 2002 - has Muirs
Street Smart Travellers Atlas 9th edition - 2006 - has Muirs

So over that time, Landgate and/or their 'checkers' as they used to contract out 'on the ground' - had not chosen to amend that naming -

However.... current on line info from the landgate locate website - https://maps.slip.wa.gov.au/landgate/locate/. has returned it to singular... Anyones guess as to what has gone on... JarrahTree 08:40, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply

Really confusing! I dug up a picture of a road sign, see here, which states Muirs Highway. On the other hand, even Main Roads Western Australia states Muir Highway when doing a search for the road and does not recognise Muirs at all. Same on this map, also states Muir. I will make Muir Highway a redirect for now. Calistemon (talk) 09:27, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Google finds these mentions of the plural:
A search through the Shire of Plantagenet website finds earlier references to the plural and later references to the singular, and then a more specific search turns up:
  • Meeting minutes, 2011, that include "MUIRS HIGHWAY - REQUEST TO RENAME" (to Muir, singular) - "a further request for assistance ... for the renaming of ‘Muirs Highway’ to ‘Muir Highway’ " (after the failure of an earlier 2009 request)
It seems likely that the rename request was successful the second (or later) time. A direct request to the Shire might yield specific information. If we can verify the rename, it should be mentioned in the article. Mitch Ames (talk) 10:37, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Not really, you have found the detail close enough, unlikely that the level of detail is really necessary, I have identified an era of the s, you have found where there is a reaction from the apple end of the highway, and the misnomer of plural/singular, is more likely the possessive to something less possessive... Muirs HighwayMuir Highway – All current sources I was able to view stated Muir Highway as its current name. Examples are Main Roads Western Australia, Road Information Mapping System, the HEMA WA Road & 4WD Track Atlas, Google maps and OpenStreet maps. I have however also found one picture of a road sign, see here, that states Muirs Highway. I think, a consensus decision is required as to what the official name is. modified response - Strong Support of move repeatedly named with s in the last 40 years, but now (2009-2010) again without the 's' as supported by mitch's google searching above (as in the proposal to name the road), I support the move/change, as long as it is recognised in the text that it had been with 's' for over 30 years. I'm not sure it is meant to be plural. As far as I can establish, the name goes back to 1865 and Andrew Muir. It might have been a Possessive s instead. Calistemon (talk) 10:26, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
Support move. This Google search shows up more results than this Google search. It seems that sources are leaning towards the name without the "s", although seemingly both names have been used. Steelkamp (talk) 13:07, 5 October 2024 (UTC)Reply
