Biography

[edit]

Alexandr Stoianoglo is an ethnic Gagauz.[2] He was a member of the Parliament of Moldova in 2009-2014 and has been Prosecutor General of Moldova since 2019. On 5 October 2021, he was arrested under allegations of corruption, and replaced by Dumitru Robu.[3] Five cases were then filled against him by government MP Lilian Carp, and he was suspended from office, before being ultimately dismissed in September 2023.[4] In 2023 the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Stoianoglo's right to a fair trial had been violated and awarded him 3,600 Euros in damages.[5] In February 2024, a Chișinău court acquitted him in the case involving authorisation of payments to a subordinate prosecutor.[4] During the trial, Stoianoglo accused the government that it had started the cases to prevent him from ridding the prosecutor's office of political influence.[4]
