Citrullus lanatus est planta familiae Curcubitacearum, cuius fructus edi potest. In Africa australi sponte crescit.
Semina varietatum silvaticarum et cultarum Citrulli lanati, ab hominibus millennio III a.ae.v. viventibus deposita, in spelunca Shungweni Africae Australis reperta sunt.[1] Semina huius fructus Europae antiquissima apud Crania in Graecia septentrionali, saeculo IX vel VIII a.ae.v. deposita, effossa sunt.[2]
In libris antiquis etiam pepo vel pepon appellatur,[3] a voce Graeca πέπων, qua significatur "fructus quilibet a sole excoctus, et ad maturitatem perductus".[4] Confer Cucurbitam peponem, nomen recentius speciei Mundi novi.
