The Dan Ryan Woods is a 257-acre public space in Chicago, Illinois, managed by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County.[1]. It includes over 350 miles of paved and unpaved trails[2], 300 picnic groves, and 41 designated shelter areas[3]. The woods also offer popular sledding hills, bike rails, high-elevation viewpoints, and historic limestone aqueducts[4]. The Dan Ryan Woods visitor center is located at S Wester Avenue and West 87st Street[5]
The Dan Ryan Woods was included in the 1909 Burnham Plan of Chicago's "outer park system." The land was purchased in 1917 to become parkland and was named after Forest Preserves board member Daniel Ryan, Sr. in 1924[6].
