GNOME Snapshot, often shortened to Snapshot, is a webcam application for GNOME[2] originally created by Maximiliano Sandoval and Jamie Murphy[3] that aims to be "the next-generation camera app for GNOME."[4] GNOME Snapshot is also convergent, meaning it supports small form factors, such as mobile phones,[4][5] and supports switching between front and rear cameras.[6]

Features

[edit]

GNOME Snapshot comes with a limited set of features, such as:

  • Countdown timer, ranging from 3, 5, and 10 seconds[7]
  • Toggle the shutter sound[7]

History

[edit]

On 13 February 2020, an concept design for a new GNOME camera app[8] was made by Tobias Bernard, a user interface and user experience designer at Purism, and member of the GNOME design team.[9]

Almost three years later, Sandoval created GNOME Snapshot,[10] taking inspiration from Bernard's concept design.

On 19 February 2023, Sandoval requested for GNOME Snapshot to join the GNOME Incubator,[11] which is the start of the process of an app entering into GNOME Core.[12] It has been accepted into incubation two months later.

On 2 June 2023, Sandoval requested a final review of GNOME Snapshot. Approval has been granted a month later, and entered GNOME Core on 19 July 2023.
