Joe Germanotta (born August 9, 1957, in Elizabeth, New Jersey) is an American entrepreneur, restaurateur, and philanthropist. He is best known as the father of pop music icon Lady Gaga (Stefani Germanotta) and fashion designer Natali Germanotta. He is married to Cynthia Germanotta, and the couple wed at the small chapel of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City.[1]

Early Life and Education

Germanotta was raised in New Jersey and later attended Michigan State University, where he graduated from the School of Hospitality Business, a specialized institution within the Eli Broad College of Business.[2] Germanotta is a dedicated supporter of the MSU Spartans basketball team, particularly during the NCAA tournament, commonly known as "March Madness." [3] He also serves as a mentor to students in the business school's Entrepreneur Program. [4]

Career

Germanotta’s worked for an accounting firm and several large software and telecommunications corporations for 39 years.[5] He gained recognition in the hospitality industry after opening Joanne Trattoria, an Italian restaurant which has been relaunched as an entertainment hub. [6] In addition to running the restaurant, Germanotta authored "Joanne's Trattoria Cookbook," sharing recipes and stories from the restaurant. [7]

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, he partnered with Chef Art Smith as the primary investor in Art Bird & Whisky Bar, located in New York City's Grand Central Terminal. Although the location was forced to close during the pandemic, the Art Bird brand continues to operate as Artbird Express, a ghost kitchen in NYC, and Art Bird New York, NY, with locations at 18 Live Nation amphitheaters across the United States.[8]

Philanthropy and Board Memberships

Germanotta serves on the board of directors of the Lupus Research Alliance and the Born This Way Foundation, the latter founded by his daughter, Lady Gaga, and his wife, Cynthia Germanotta, to support the mental health and wellness of young people.[9] His family is a significant donor to both organizations. Additionally, the Germanotta family finances an endowment for Michigan State University's Athletic Department and the Eli Broad School of Business. [10]
