Wilhelm Stenhammar's 2nd Symphony was composed between 1910 and 1915. It is the composer's Op. # 34.

The work is in four movements: [1]

  1. Allegro energico (G minor)
  2. Andante (C major)
  3. Scherzo. Allegro, ma non troppo presto (G minor)
  4. Finale. Sostenuto-Allegro vivace (G minor)

The symphony is scored for the following instruments: flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets (B♭), 2 bassoons 4 horns (F), 2 trumpets (B♭), 3 trombones, timpani, strings. [2]

The symphony opens with the proud main theme presented by the bassoons and the cellos:

{
  <<
    \new Staff = "Cello" \with {
      instrumentName = "Cello"
    }
    {
      \set Score.tempoHideNote = ##t  \tempo 2 = 60
      \set Staff.midiInstrument = #"String ensemble 1"
      \clef bass
      \key d \minor
      \time 3/4
      \relative c {
        \tempo "con ritmo elastico"
        (g'4\f  d')  d  |
        c bes8 c d4 |
        c bes8 c a4 )|

        d8 c bes a g4 |

        bes8 a g2 |
      }
    }
  >>
}

After which the woodwinds reply enthusiastically:

{
  <<
    \new Staff = "Flute" \with {
      instrumentName = "Flute"
    }
    {
      \set Staff.midiInstrument = #"flute"
      \clef treble
      \key d \minor
      \time 3/4

        g2)
      }
    }
  >>
}

After a brief exposition, a second theme is presented by the woodwinds:

{
  <<
    \new Staff = "clarinet" \with {
      instrumentName = "Clar."
    }
    {
      \set Staff.midiInstrument = #"clarinet"
