Description |
Photograph by Amir Zaki Rock #29 (Ultrachrome archival photograph. 65" x 60", 2016. "Formal Matter" series). The image illustrates a key later series in the "Natural Landscape" body of work of Amir Zaki in the 2010s, when he focused on depicting the "natural" landscape using analog formal strategies (cropping, composition) in ways that explore the tension between formalist notions of timeless beauty and digital photography's possible unreliability (e.g., compositing). The work of this series, and this work in particular, is discussed in the article and was discussed extensively in art journals and press publications and prominently exhibited. |

Purpose of use |
The image serves an informational and educational purpose as the primary means of illustrating a key later series in the "Natural Landscape" body of work of Amir Zaki: his 2010s: his photographs depicting the "natural" landscape and forms such as rocks, wood, water, trees and plants, using analog strategies that eliminate perceptual clues such as cropping and composition to de-familiarize and abstract them. This work explored the tension between formalist notions of timeless beauty and digital photography's potential unreliability, the language of photographic production, including digital manipulation and distortion (in the "Rock" series, composited images that seem whole). Because the article is about an artist and his work, the omission of the image would significantly limit a reader's understanding and ability to visualize this major body of work of Zaki's and the degree that his formal visual strategies abstract his subjects. This series and particular work is discussed in the article and by prominent art writers cited in the article, and was prominently exhibited. |
Replaceable? |
There is no free equivalent of this or any other of this series by Amir Zaki, so the image cannot be replaced by a free image. |
