Most of the trees surrounding it (all red gums) are too young to have hollows suitable for vertebrates. They are the result of a deliberate logging practices, which either cleared or ringbarked most larger River Red Gums in the region in order to grow a dense stand of uniform trees. This has led to many species in the area being threatened with local or even global extinction due to the scarcity of remaining old hollow-bearing trees.
The area has also been stressed by lack of flooding from the nearby Murray river, and grazing by cattle which prevent an understory from developing.
