Purpose of use

The German armed forces during the Normandy campaign made extensive use of mortars, which is noted within the main article text. According to one source (stated within the article) German mortars accounted for 70% of Anglo-Canadian casualties. The photo and caption have been used to illustrate these points, while also showing Waffen SS Panzergrenadiers - the main German force to oppose Operation Epsom.

Replaceable?

After Google searching, there appears to be no other photos available of Waffen SS Panzergrenadiers manning any form of mortar. While the date this photo was taken has not been established, it does show the most appropriate branch of the German armed forces in relation to Operation Epsom.
