Description
English: THE RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, 1905. NOVOSTI PRESS AGENCY. The Russian battleship, KNIAZ POTEMKIN TAVRITCHSKI, which was serving with the Black Sea Fleet when a serious mutiny broke out on board in June 1905. The mutiny, which evolved into active support for the unsuccessful Russian Revolution in Odessa and a naval confrontation with the Black Sea Fleet, is believed to have been triggered by the crew's refusal to eat meat unfit for consumption. The Potemkin Uprising had a significant influence on the revolutionizing process in the Russian army and fleet in 1917 and inspired Eisenstein's epic film of the same name.
FURTHER INFORMATION: After the Revolution, the POTEMKIN was renamed PANTELEIMON. In April 1919, it was sunk in Sevastopol to prevent it from falling into Bolshevik hand.
