"Immaterial" is a song recorded by the Scottish musician Sophie. It is the eighth track from her debut studio album, Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides, released on 15 June 2018.

Background and composition

[edit]

"Immaterial" features lead vocals from Cecile Believe, who co-wrote it with Sophie. Sophie felt that it was the most mainstream of all Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides tracks.[1] The track was described as hyperpop.[1][2] Sources described "Immaterial" as a reference to the Madonna song "Material Girl";[3][4] Sophie had initially titled it "Immaterial Girl" for a direct reference.[3]

Reception

[edit]

"Immaterial" was named one of the best songs of 2018 by The Fader,[5] Noisey (Vice),[6] PopMatters,[7] Tiny Mix Tapes,[8] Dazed,[9] Mixmag,[10] NME,[11] Resident Advisor,[12] The 405,[13] and Jenesaispop.[14] It was featured as one of Sophie's best or most essential songs in lists published by Billboard,[15] The Fader,[4] Junkee,[16] The New York Times,[17] and NME.[18] Rolling Stone Australia ranked it as the 40th greatest dance song of all time.[19] The Forty-Five's Sophie Walker named it the best hyperpop song of all time.[2]
