Kuro Games (Chinese: 库洛游戏; pinyin: Kù Luò yóuxì) is a Chinese video game development and publishing company.

The company is the creator of Punishing: Gray Raven, an action role-playing game released globally in 2021.[1] It also worked on an open-world action RPG named Wuthering Waves.[2]

History

[edit]

Kuro Games was formerly known as Zhuhai Kuro Technology Co. Ltd. and was founded in 2014, when it was located in Zhuhai.[3] In 2015, Kuro Games relocated the company to Guangzhou and changed its name to Guangzhou Kuro Technology Co. The relocation and name change was a new stage in the development of Kuro Games.[4]

Kuro Games' first title, Twin Tail Battleground, was officially released in September 2016, but ceased running the service in 2018.[5] In addition to this, in 2017 Kuro Games began development of Punishing: Gray Raven, which was praised by players.[4] In the same year, Kuro Games was founded by Guangzhou Kuro Technology Company Limited, a relatively small company with only about 30 employees.[6]

On October 23, 2019, Kuro Games announced that it has received a capital increase of $30 million from Hero HootSuite, and as a result, will hold a 32.5% stake in Kuro Games. The capital increase brings more financial support and development opportunities to Kuro Games, and also shows that Kuro Games' status and value in the industry has been recognized.[7]

In 2021, Kuro Games announced a tie-in between titles Punishing: Gray Raven and Nier: Automata.[8] While in the same year, a subsidiary in Hong Kong was created.

In 2022, Kuro Games announced the open-world action game Wuthering Waves and began limited tests in China.[9] Producer Songlun Li was interviewed at the TapTap Developer Salon on July 30th.[10]

On March 17, 2023, Tencent announced that it had taken a stake in Kuro Games and held 14.33% of the company's shares. After this acquisition, the shareholding of Kuro Games was updated to 37.07% owned by Hero Hub, 14.33% by Tencent Limited, and 48.59% by the Founding Team. This move will bring more capital and technical support to Kuro Games and enhance the company's competitive strength and market position.[11]
