RE:"I do not see how the French Wikipedia convention can be considered a model to be followed, when there is a much more relevant convention established...."

Nach mbeadh sé oiriúnach an t-ábhar seo a phlé i nGaeilge? "Is í Vicipéid na Gaeilge an leagan Gaeilge den chiclipéid phoiblí ilteangach Vicipéid nó Wikipedia."(Tagairt:https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vicip%C3%A9id_na_Gaeilge) Ériugena (plé) 21:13, 3 Eanáir 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Beadh sé oiriúnach an t-ábhar seo a phlé i nGaeilge, nó i mBéarla, nó in aon teanga eile - seachas athruithe a dhéanamh gan plé nó comhthoil.
Tá coinbhinsiúin an tionscadail níos tábhachtaí (nó, ar a laghad, chomh-tábhachtach) ná teanga an tionscadail.
OK - D'oscail tú snáithe plé, ach ba chóir go mbeadh IONCHUR AMHÁIN (in san snáithe plé) sula ndéanfaidh tú athrú chomh mór sin. Ní athraíonn díriú ar an teanga (a d'úsáid mé i log amháin) é sin.

How we will see unregistered users

[athraigh foinse]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Is fearr gan en:Draft:Fergus O'Connor (publisher) a fhágáil ina dhréacht mar d'fhéadfadh URLanna a úsáidtear mar fhoinsí a bheith faoi réir lobhadh naisc sa dréacht. Is rogha é aistriúchán go dtí an Vicipéid Ghaeilge freisin, tá tú níos fearr air sin ná mise. Tá Wikidata:Q114151863 cruthaithe agam. Go raibh maith agat. -- Deirge Ó Dhaoinebeaga(a)plé 06:52, 24 Meán Fómhair 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use

[athraigh foinse]

Hi Guliolopez, you left me advice about the importance of images on my talk page a fortnight ago.

... Maybe you can help me better understand what you are saying.
It might be easier if you can take examples and tell me what you would or would not do in certain cases.
For example, take the case of John%20L.%20Murray, the judge. I updated the page today and there is no image on Commons. https://ga.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_L._Murray_(breitheamh)
Now I am not very motivated to put up a picture of him ... obviously subjects more Gaelach are more motivating.
But suppose I want to upload a picture of him.
What would be acceptable ?
My first port of call is a Google image search and I see there that there are no free licences available. I then go to Bing, and I see that there are images, with several types of free licenses avaialble
https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=%22John+L.+Murray%22&qs=n&form=QBIDMH&sp=-1&pq=%22john+l.+murray%22&sc=10-16&cvid=F4F02476E0C64C08A1BEF42C406DE05E&ghsh=0&ghacc=0&first=1&cw=1263&ch=569
I could then crop the image and mention the source.
Now first, what type of free licences are acceptable please ? ... there are several types mentioned on Bing.
Second, what kind of disclaimer or other information should I put up ?

I saw a report comparing the different language Wikipedias, and a major reason why Gaeilge was ranked low was the low number of images compared to other language Wikipedias. Not surprising. given that I am the only person actively uploading images I think.

I do wonder if our proximity to English, where the policing of images is very strict, intimidates people writing as Gaeilge, and editors writing eg in Swahili or Catalan are likely to have a more relaxed interpretation of what can be done.

Thanks for any enlightenment you can share agus beir bua, Ciarán TGcoa (plé) 21:59, 29 Eanáir 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Apologies. I completely overlooked your original response and then got waylaid. I may not be able to fully respond to all your points/queries, but will try and cover the main ones.
  • RE: "I want to upload a picture of [a recently deceased judge]. What would be acceptable". In all honesty it depends (where the image comes from, size, neccessity, etc). In order to meet the generally agreed non-free content criteria, the image would have to significantly increase a reader's understanding of the topic (with its omission being detrimental to that understanding), the image would have to be small (so that it meets the "reader understanding" purpose without impacting any commercial or other purpose of the rights-holder), and used only on a directly relevant article. Personally, if it were me, I would be asking myself: "is an image critical to the reader's understanding?", "is/isn't there an image on the EN project? (why not?)", "did I make it low-res enough to avoid impacting commercial rights", etc.
  • RE: "what type of free licences are acceptable". I'm not sure I understand the question. The only types of "free" images that are acceptable are Commons-compatible ones. See Commons:Creative Commons copyright tags. The only rationale for "non-free" images is a "fair use" claim. Which, as above, is bounded by time/place/manner restrictions.
  • RE: "[GA Wikipedia] was ranked low was the low number of images compared to other language Wikipedias". I don't know what ranking you are talking about. But, in all honesty, a "number of images" metric sounds like a measure of quantity. And not like a measure of quality. Certainly having a high-number of copyrighted images on the project isn't, to my mind, a "good thing".

Piceanna

[athraigh foinse]

Cad is fiú na piceanna sin ar fad a bhaint ó ailt? Nach bhfuil bealaí eile go leor gur féidir am a chaitheamh anseo ar bhealach níos fiúntaí? Eomurchadha (plé) 12:08, 31 Iúil 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi.
"Why remove pics?". Bhain mé na piceanna sin (mar shampla an gceann seo agus an ceann seo) toisc gur sáruithe cóipchirt a bhí ann. (Ní féidir linn "fair use / must use copyrighted works coz no free ones avail" a éileamh, agus piceanna eile ar fáil ar an Chómhaoin.)
"No better ways to help?". Is é ceart agus ról an riarthóir na polasaithe chóipchirt (agus polasaithe uille) an Vicipéid a chur i bhfeidhm. Táim ag cabhrú leis an tionscadal trína chosaint ó rioscaí cóipchirt agus rioscaí eile. Tá ascanna eile á dhéanamh ag daoine eile.

Yeah, brón orm ach aontaím le Guliolopez ar an ocáid seo. Tá sé de dhualgas orainn na rialacha maidir le cóipcheart agus "Fair Use" a leanúint go dlúth, agus ní mór do riarthóirí é sin a fhorfheidhmiú. Aontaím go bhfuil sé míthaitneamhach :/ - Alison plé 17:45, 31 Iúil 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Má tá tú chun piceanna a bhaint - is fiú ceann a chur ina n-áit. Is daibhre Creachmhaoil gan an pic sin a bheith ann. Eomurchadha (plé) 17:35, 13 Márta 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Grand. Ceart go leor. Déanta. Tá roinnt eile ar an gCómhaoin. Más maith leat féin. Guliolopez (plé) 17:48, 13 Márta 2024 (UTC)[reply]
