Also, I wonder if all the other cities listed here were subjected to same rigorous check. Regardless, I feel the city at least deserves mention. I have peer-reviewed refs for 1500BC and 400AD. You might discern what it is saying - this new finding (of 4000 year old crafts and a scripture pillar) is significant because previously most international scholars believed that Varanasi was 3000 years old. How is it not a reliable source? The book is published by Pearson publication - a reputed publishing house. The author is Upendar Singh - Professor Emeritus in the Department of History at the University of Delhi. I feel that it is way more credible than many citations used on this page. I have added another reference. The excavated settlement is 13 km from Varanasi city and still within 'Varanasi District'. Also, the reference says that archaeologists believe the settlement to be a 'feeder village', which by definition are satellite villages that develop 'AFTER' a big city has developed. Tag: Undo
