Flag - New Caledonia

[edit]

The flag issue is a vexed one. As noted, the new flag obtained "official status" in recent years. Yet the French flag is also "official". So which should be used? Because these are football matches, presumably the football authorities are the correct arbiters. FIFA still use the French flag (see here) and the OFC is unclear, although this picture shows the French flag for one of the member associations (this may, however, be wildly out of date). What is the reasoning for using the new flag over these official football sources, given that these pages are about football, not about politics. Jlsa (talk) 10:47, 13 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Group A Scenarios

[edit]

The old scenarios seemed to cover more events that could possibly happen. Could you please explain to me the reasoning behind the new scenarios? I find them not that accurate and too general. Nitroxium (talk) 00:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Scenarios in general DO cover all matches on a given day. Generally, however, they are not TOO complicated. This is obviously not the case here (I got to five conditions on Vanuatu qualifying but there were at least a couple more unlikely possibilities that I kept thinking of) and I would doubt anybody could actually get the scenarios correct (the initial "guess" was very, very, very, very wrong). However, the set-up in this case is different, because the matches are NOT going to be played simultaneously. (You might consider what would happen if these matches were played 1 day apart rather than just three hours). As a result, many of the situations outlined in the "full description" are actually impossible to realise at any given points because it depends on the two sets of results being compared (for example, Tahiti is out if they both lose by more than 5 goals, and if NCL's win + VAN's win equals 8 or more goals) - yet that comparison will never be able to be made, because we will already know the NCL victory margin - if they win - before TAH start playing. So, that makes the condition effectively meaningless while the first match is being played. However (as shown now) what matters in the first match is whether NCL wins by 5 (definitely qualifying) or less by 8 or more (definitely out and Samoa could still qualify). That is information that can be used, but would be lost (or at least very heavily obscured) if we also put in the possibilities of the later match. Jlsa (talk) 01:06, 4 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
